Why do I not want a Steyr 1895 carbine?

Post by SA1911a1 »

I know the ammo is a bit pricey but why do these rifles still sale for only $100.00? Do you have one? Why don't we all?

It is the ammo thing, as far as I can tell. That and they have quite a kick. I suppose a bunch of us are pussies.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Straight pulls just never caught on here all that well, prices on them have always lagged behind other milsurps. The ammo for sure, no matter Swiss rifles or the Steyr's ammo has never been in great supply and it's always more expensive than most other rifles.

It is certainly the cost of ammo. There is no cheap milsurplus ammo for them. Too expensive a rifle to shoot. It's a great rifle.

I have 3 of them 2 carbines, a Hungarian and an Austrian and an Austrian rifle. I bought mine 10 years ago. Even at that time the ammo was more expensive than other surplus. The thing I find funny is the same, "rare", 1938 Nazi marked ammo I bought then is still being sold today.

There is still some of the ammo for sale here at Arias in Panama City! Some of it Nazi marked, some not, some on the clips some not. It's where I got my ammo from.

I have a couple and a m95m. Just get an m95m or m95/24 and you wont have to worry about the ammo thing

I almost bought one, and wish I had. I don't see them for $100 anymore at least where I'm looking.

It is mostly the ammo cost and partially the pain. I've only sold a few firearms and I have had regrets about all of them except my Budapest M95. M44 and No5 Mk1 have some kick but the M95 was downright painful. Maybe it's because I am getting older, but when I took mine to the range after two rounds I seriously considered unloading the rest. For fear of looking and feeling like a wimp I fired off the other 3 rounds and promptly listed it for sale. I ended up trading it with a guy in Michigan for an SA Stamped Carcano. The Carcano I think is even smaller, but there is no pain involved in shooting it.

Theyre neat little rifles, I love mine! Not too much fun for shooting groups but great for just shooting for shooting sake. As for ammo, stick to your guns and try not to pay more than $10/box for the "nazi"stuff. Despite the claims its not rare by any means. And while the supply of 1938-39 ammo is certainly finite the carbines dont lend themselves to extensive shooting sessions and its been a gunshow constant for ages. Occasionally I see bags of loose rounds that can be good deals, where the dealer stripped off and sold the clips.

Speaking of clips, I wouldnt spend a nickel on loose clips unless you have to or just cant help yourself With 2 in everybox, they accumulate fast. Occasionally bulgarian 30s surplus can be found as well as modern prvi/hornady/graf production. Handloading components are also available.

These arent rifles for the faint of heart, many are much less than smooth in operation and some surplus ammo seems to amplify this (bulgarian?) The recoil is stout but I don't think its up to its reputation, the "bark" however is considerable and adds to the experience. I think its a hoot lol

.....Its like a really really short roller coaster ride you hold against your face!

The original carbine/stutzen bayonets have a taller sight blade dove tailed into the muzzle ring that is suppose to compensate for its attachment.

I contacted them a week ago regarding firearms that say 'CALL FOR AVAILABILITY", they told me that means they are out of stock but "hope to get more in"...
