Did I mention I need to stay out of pawn shops

Post by SA1911a1 »

I was taking my wife out antiquing yesterday and swung by a pawn shop I haven't visited in probably nine months. They had several "unmodified" but overpriced surplus rifles in the rack, and one sitting on the floor. A mid-war type 99 Arisaka. A lot of exterior rust, bent rear sight ladder and a nipped firing pin. I negotiated a $100.00 OTD and I am sure the owner was glad to see it go at that price. It cleaned up well, I was able to straighten the sight ladder without breaking it, and I borrowed a firing pin from another 99 and took it on my Sunday Shoot today. I shot a box of ammo and this old rifle is as accurate as all get out. With the firing pin (on the way) I will have under $150.00 in this one.

Fell into a pawn-shop again? You can't seem to leave the house without falling into a pawn-shop, gun-store etc. I think "Hey Honey lets go antiquing" is code for let me see if I can find a homeless gun to adopt! LOL

Cool job of rescuing the old gal! Have you made it back out to Arias Artifacts in Panama City yet?

I bought a Romanian trainer .22 from him about three years ago, but I haven't been back. I will have to add PC to my "antiquing" route.

There is another place you can hit, he gets some good stuff in from time to time. I've bought a few rifles from him over the years. The web page only shows commercial guns, but every gun show (here in PC, FL) he has a rack of Military Surplus for sale. They are both very polite, hell even offered to sell me a Japanese trainer he had back at the shop for around $75.00 (Said he would even absorb the shipping cost on it) since I was buying a Type 99 from him at the gun show.

Great find! I miss gun selling pawn shops, I use to come across some really cool stuff. (Such things aren't legal in PA)

37th series rifles have a good range of variation. It starts off with beautiful fully accessorized rifles and ending in the mid 50 thousands with late transitional rifles. Did it come with the sling? It looks similar to one I have that came off another type 99. Is this one cross hatched? I dont think mine is japanese, but possibly a random US equipment strap of some sort that im not familiar with. I've been curious to see another and figure it out.

A few years ago my brother was still a pawn shop manager and my best deals came from him. The problem is once I got him to actively watch for milsurp rifles for me, he got interested in them for himself, so I missed a few nice ones because he bought them for himself. :)

Yea, brothers are like that. Last week, I was shooting with my brother and I was talking about something in a Ga. pawn shop I was thinking about going back for. He seemed to think it was a great buy. A little while later he asked me what shop that it was in. I told him it was in a shop in Alabama..... I bet the dirty dog drove up there the following Monday when I was at work. :D

I put the sling on the rifle. I bought a pile of those dirt cheap, so anything that doesn't have a correct sling wears one of them until I can do better. It may be on that rifle for a long time with the going rate for original Japanese slings.

Thats funny, im sirt of doing the same thing with my sling, it rides in my gun show back as it will works on any rifle I might buy.

I wouldnt sweat Japanese slings, owning them can be a bit overated and occasionally a curse. This goes double if you want to shoot the rifle. The rubberized ones are typically card board stiff and leather ones are usually not structurally sound. Any that are still flexible or of serviceable strength would be of considerable value, as far as slings go.
