I purchased a collection from a friend because he was retiring out of the country and one of the pieces is a Mosin 91 and I am assuming that the can, shown in the picture, is 7.62x54r but not sure. can anyone identify what ammo is in the can, I really don't want to open it, how many rounds are in it, I am assuming it is the standard 440, where the ammo is from and what kind of ammo it is (i.e. steel core, corrosive, etc.)? Any and all info is extremely appreciated.

Looks Chinese.

I always open the bottom side then cut the top off nice and neat and hang it on the wall in my man-cave. No help on the ammo though, sorry!

The characters on his tin are ideographic, probably Chinese. The characters on the tins in your post are Cyrillic. Most Warsaw Pact nations used Cyrillic characters on their ammo cans and crates. There layout is similar between the two, but is not exactly correspondent.

'Fraid I can't help you much, either. goldcds. I know the Cyrillc characters, but no written Chinese at all.

That would help if the can where open & you could match it to the actual ammo & it's stampings.

If it were me, I would open her up to see what's inside. Then take the ammo & put it in an ammo can with dissectant packs.

I am betting on 720 rounds of 7.62 x 39. And that is my SWAG for the day.

Thanks so much SA1911a1 - after your post I did some research and you were spot on. It is indeed a can of 7.62x39, 720 rounds of the stuff.

Can contains Chinese 7.62x39 "Type 56" rounds, no 7.62x54R "Type 53"
