Sight in day

Headed out to my friend's place this afternoon to sight in a couple of gopher defense artillery pieces.

I bought an el cheapo Tasco red dot on sale for $44.95. I have never owned one of any kind, so I figured I can't go too far wrong to try this one.

I mounted it on my 10/22 TD and got it sighted in with no trouble. It took maybe 15 rounds or so. Great deal for my fuzzy old eyes! Just have to remember to shut it off. I didn't keep a target, but I was shooting at about 30 of my paces which would be around 90 ft. (Yes! FEET!)

Next up was my little Chiappa M1-22. Sights are pretty cheesy, but easy to adjust. I fired about 40 rounds to break it in, using both magazines that came with it. The little thing never caused one bit of trouble, even though it is a cheaply built rifle.

The target shown was the last 10 rounds, and the flyer off to the bottom right was the first shot. Don't ask me why it landed over there.

All the other 9 were close to the center, and given my fuzzy eyes and the peep sight, I was tickled pink with the way it shot. I used 555 Winchester.

Nice shooting, I never used that type of scope. I see you have a scrap lumber pile, I have one myself, handy for lighting the wood stove.

Nice but I don't see a hill for a backstop.

Actually, there is a pretty good hill back of the 100 yd. target. There are no houses for a long ways. It is a private range. He also has another nice big table with 100, 200, 300 yard targets.

Sight in days can be fun, unless you forget your spotting scope. Shoot a round, walk to and back 50 yards, shoot again and repeat until satisfied with result. I did this once with one of my Mossbergs and learned to double check for all necessary equipment before leaving house to go to range.

We actually do have some hilly country. The big farm I work for has one field of around 600 cares they call the Himalayas. Some of their land is as flat as a pancake. There are a couple of places the combine won't climb the hill in high range, though.

In certain areas, yes, there are gophers. We hit the jackpot last summer just northeast of this yard about 5 miles, down in the Qu'Appelle Valley. An old spinster lady has a bunch of cattle and the yard area was overrun with gophers. So we did our civic duty, at her express invitation, and shot a pile of gophers. She told us, "You are welcome to shoot as many of those little bastards as you can!" No mistaking what she means anyway! :D

First shots are often flyers due to oil in the barrel or just a shooter getting reacquainted with the trigger.

Yeah, could be the trigger. It is awful. Will need to get my buddy Deaner to work on it a bit. I am still amazed how it grouped, with me shooting it! :)
