30.06 black tip AP vs. Mosin steel core

Post by steelbuttplate »

What is the difference? Has the LCA black tip 30.06 got something different that makes it more AP than steel core 7.62x54r. I know JYD had some penetration tests on here a while back, how does Mosin compare? Wha bout .303 Greek HXP...it's bad ass going thru metal :vcool:
Correction, it was Jbob's post :bonk:

Plain steel core ammo has a soft mild steel core. This is not armor piercing. IIRC, AP has a hardened steel or some other hard material in the core.

Yep. The mild steel core in most com-bloc ammo is just there to save lead, which was in shorter supply than the mild steel. AP uses a hardened steel penetrator core that is designed to penetrate armor.

I wasn't messing with AP rounds, but ballistics are similar for the .30-06 and the 7.62x54r.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
