Picked this up over the week-end at $200.00 at a gun-show. I bought it more for an interesting wall-hanger. The guy selling it didn't know the story behind it (Real, reproduction, etc), he had a table full of "Black Rifles". Obviously someone went nuts cleaning the barrel, below the wood-line it is black, above the wood-line it is in the white.

There are some aspects that make it seem real, the fitting of the parts, the faint stock cartouche, etc, but black powder guns are outside my realm of knowledge. So any help will be and is greatly appreciated, all I know for sure is that there are a ton of stamps on this thing (And I thought Mosin-Nagants were bad with stamps). If there are any additional photos needed of specific areas just let me know.

The sling swivel on the trigger guard is a modified replacement swivel.

According to the markings it is a Mk II** conversion.

Load it up! You have to take a few shots with it. I have a carbine and it is just fun to fire.

I reload my own and make my shells.

It looks like the Florida boys pulled off a successful raid in Alabama the weekend. Nice buy neighbor!

Yeap at the rate we are going, Alabama won't have any surplus guns left! Guess we'll have to raid Georgia after we are finish with Alabama!

Nice. A surprising number of these seem to have come back from Afghanistan in recent years, I would bet on that for this one, it has the right look. The other source is the Nepal hoard IMA brought out and is still selling , but these tend to be a bit more rough. Your rifle looks like it's had a lot of handling, that is typical of the bringhome rifles. A certain seller on GB gets a hell of a lot more than $200 for these, too bad the papers aren't with it, but some guys just toss them out once they get home.

After reading your response about it being an Afghanistan rifle, I went back over it with a fine tooth comb (Magnifying glass, flash light and my glasses). I found the faint remains of Farsi/Arabic script on the well worn butt-plate. I will have to try and copy what I can make out, and see if anyone can make sense of it.

These original Snider Enfield rifles, how did they end up in Afghanistan?
