Bubba strikes again

So I went to the local LGS to see what they have and ran into the guy that bought a M91/30Tikka w/ the round receiver, I was hoping to run into him so I can try to buy the rifle and was going to offer him 400.00(he paid 350.00) until he said "I took it home and sanded the stock cause I did not like the finish, but once the true oil dries I can sell it to ya what do you offer?" At that point I told him that whatever value it had was now gone and maybe would give him 200.00 for it, The sad part is he knew what he had and did not care and from what the LGS has said he has a habit of buying older guns and doing stuff like this then tries to sell them back what he gets bored or they quit working. :angry4: I really wanted that Tikka

There are lots of people that don't care, even with a fairly big amount invested. I've been seeing quite a few bubba jobs done to m39s lately since they became more available, and not just to rough ones. Just like flushing money down the crapper IMO

Exactly; Fact is they don't care if their handiwork ruins the value... Their handiwork is more valuable to them than the item itself. Morons... :angry4:

Hopefully the increase in prices on milsurps will if not stop but slow Bubba way down.

I knew the bubba's were going to ruin these when they became available to the masses. I think it's some sort of genetic compulsion for some people. They go to extreme lengths to rationalize and justify their deeds. They also tend to be very boorish.

There is an older fellow I have been set up next to a number of times down state and he refinishes every rifle he gets his hands on and has for years. Many people have talked to him for years but he will not cease doing the refinish route on everything he buys or trades for. He has offered things to me late in a lot of shows saying they look a lot nicer than the same model rifles I have on my table. I have actually bought a couple of things and tried to return them to somewhat acceptable as a collector rifle but just about any collector worth their salt spots them immediately. One thing in favor of that is he has not discovered Poly coatings yet and most of the stuff is in oil based coatings and his sanding is light so if I see a year and model I lack I try and see if it is still there at the end of the weekend. Sad part of it is he has a following that buys from him and I have to admit it he is a likable old guy and I enjoy being next to him. People have their ways and being a bubba doesn't mean that you have to hate them as a person. I have talked to him for years and gotten some pieces I still have in my collection after a bit of return to normal somewhat. Life goes on and I guess it isn't the absolute end of the world but sometimes it sure hurts looking at them. :o Bill

That's nice Bill. But if you change your mind you should carry a small saw and cut a couple of his chair legs half way through. [emoji12]

Is he over 80? If you are calling him "older" I am assuming that he is. His generation of collector didn't see what we collect as collectable, and thought nothing of refinishing "commie" " Kraut" "Jap" or whatever post 1900 weapons they could find. Once upon a time I knew 20 or more like him, all now in the beyond watching how much money these milsurps sell for now and shaking their heads.

Hate to see it happening but on the flip side, every one that bubba destroys makes ours that much more valuable and rare.

A small gunshow in my area was checked out by a friend yesterday (Saturday) on his way to work. The guy at the door knew he'd be back today with a pocket full of cash and a pile of like armed friends (Me included) if it was worthwhile. He told me yesterday he had to wear dark glasses to keep the shine under control. Needless to say only one of us wasted $$ on the entry fee. He said there was fresh shellac on Mosins, Enfields, Mausers including a Brazillian one with a mint crest. It's a damn shame. Polycoated SKS's as well.

It seems to be the norm around here anymore. at the same store is a '32 tula for 275.00 in a war time stock that was sanded except the finger grooves and the stock as a damp wood tacky feel to it, I'm tempted cause the metal is perfect but its not matching and the only reason I am still thinking about it is the guy I know( not the one who sanded it) owned it for a week before trading it back to his boss(LGS Owner) for a gun missing from his collection said it is a really good shooter and the bore ain't whipped to death, I would use is as a plinker to save wear on my M91's and M39, but I am hung up on that price point
