Does anyone here have any experience with this gun? My father picked one up yesterday that is in perfect condition. Metal is 100% and the wood is about 98%. It looks like someone took this gun dove hunting a couple of times and then it sat in a closet for 40+ years. The problem is that it acts like it has a magazine cut-off. It fires and ejects the first round fine, but the subsequent rounds won't come out of the magazine. I have it completely apart right now, cleaning out what appears to be old WD-40 or 3n1 oil (sticky mess). I hope that is the problem, but upon close observation, I can't tell what trips the mag release to let the rounds out of the magazine. Does anybody here know the fine workings of the Franchi? Nothing appears to be amiss, but I don't really know what I am looking for. I will post some pics when my camera charges. There is a Franchi forum of course, but I am asking you guys before I have to sign up for yet another forum.

Usually when a pump or auto won't cycle rounds out of the magazine, there's something gumming up the latch (es). There are two on the 48 AL, that are cammed by the carrier. The easiest way to clean them out is to spray the area with Gun Scrubber and re-lube. The best way to clean them out is pull them out (they are pinned, IIRC) detail clean the area, and re-lube.

I have it all apart, have cleaned it and relubed it. Tomorrow I will put it all back together, and will post the results. The thing that gets me, is that with it all apart, I cannot tell what piece hits the mag release to let the next round out of the mag tube. You say it is the carrier. I will watch that piece. I think the answer to my problem is cleaning, but I would like t know how it is supposed to work, just to add to my personal understanding of it. Thanks Entropy.

I can't speak for anything other than my Remington 1100, but it was like that, not ejecting and rechambering a round and after a clean up and lube, and a new gas seal o-ring it was good to go. I don't think a lot of people ever take their gas operated Remington apart at all.

It turned out that it was just gunked up from old oil. I cleaned everything, and left the friction ring dry per the owners manual I found online. The old man said it worked great after I gave it back to him. Unfortunately I never got a chance to get any pics of it.

That's how I got my start gunsmithing; keeping my (and then others') 1100 running. When I turned 18, I bought an 870; haven't had any function problems since.
