Dang mosin bug bit again

So after getting my m44 earlier this year and liking it. I thought it would be cool to have a 91/30 to go with it to have a big brother.
Money has been tight but a guy at my work is having a hard time. He sold me his gun for $100. It a 42 and is from the same Arsenal as my m44.
Shot it today and it's nice. Needs a good cleaning as the bolt would stick on the forth round.

Nice pair. Now you need to get a father for these two bothers, a M1891.

I'm afraid I might get another lol. What I really want next is a sks.
Cool thing is it all matching numbers. On my m44 the butt plate is not matching.

Keep looking, that SKS will come along. Probably when you least expect it. In the mean time, never pass up a deal like this. $100 is a no brainer, you buy it. Congratulations on #2. I am looking forward to seeing what #3 looks like.

And then their Finnish half-brother, an M27 or 28/30, or 39.

From what I researched the fireball from the m44 is a good repellant lol

Nice pair and the 9130 was had at a very good price.

Yes, next is an M-91 - actually any Mosin will do. Buy, buy, buy
SKS's are a blast to shoot. Love them!! And, you can buy ammo in stripper clips. Don't ever buy stripper clips on ebay - they don't fit in the guide.

Well taking the 91/30 apart for a good cleaning. Took a 20 gauge wire brush to the chamber to hope to get rid of the sticky bolt. Next is to get the heat gun out and get the cosmoline out of the wood.

Wipe the stock down with a soft cloth and leave it alone. The Soviets used shellac to coat that stock, heat will cause the oils to rise out of the wood and they can carry away the shellac as they come. This is also possible while shooting if the forend is allowed to get too hot, you will end up with patchy shellac on the handguard and forend wood. ten rounds, set the rifle aside to cool for 20 minutes before shooting again. This is why most of us bring several rifles or pistols s there is no need to overheat one rifle.

Good advice. Every once-in-a-while I buy a bundle of teri towels at Wal-Mart. I use these exclusively for degreasing heavy grease on rifles and stocks. I wash them before using and don't use fabric softener. Eventually, some get heavily stained with heavy build up of grease. I discard those. Other's can simply be thrown in the washing machine and washed using hot cycle. If you really want to be crazy, like me, you also buy a bundle of those red shop towels. I use those exclusively for the metal. Beware not to wash the teri towels and shop towels together... Teri towels will turn pink. I have lots of pink towels.
But a thorough wipe down is the best way to remove the grease. In summer, you can put them out in the sun for a while to bleed the remaining grease out of the wood that penetrated the shellac. I wouldn't use a heat gun on the wood. On the metal yes, but not the wood. Good luck.

Congrats on a nice deal. I did the same thing you are thinking about. After a 91/30 and M44 I found a Russian SKS and was very happy with my budding collection. The Mosins are fun at the range. The M44 fireball is cool, and I like to say I need the longer barrel of the 91/30 to get a more efficient burning of the powder to anyone who wants to ask why I need more rifles. If they ask why I need a shorter carbine I say because I love the fireballs. And the SKS with the semi auto needs no explanation. It is just plain fun.

I just took the heat gun to where the barrel sits. Had some coming out of it when I first shot it. Not touching anything else with heat.
Took it apart and happy to say there is no pitting. Wiped the whole thing down with clp and put it back together. Wiped the stock down with hoppes oil wipes and put her away till next time.

CLASSIC was advertising Yugo SKS for $385. Friend of mine got one last summer...looked like it had never been issued. It came with a log book which we translated on the web. It had been test fired once and than stored in the arsenal and re-conserved every year. He paid for the hand select option. After shipping and transfer fees it cost around 475. Now the prices have come down. Still too Rich for my blood. This time of the year any spare coin in my budget goes for hunting and Christmas. I tried buying a 91-30 for my wife for Christmas one year but that did not work out so good.

Dang pitbull, I know what you mean. You would think more wives would be thrilled to receive a nice Mosin or some other milsurp rifle for Christmas. I have offered many times and had total rifle rejection.
