I am using my 91/30 for hog hunting. What is the recommended type for taking one down? Because the feral hogs skin is so thick it takes a lot to get penetration. I have several hundred rounds of mil surp ammo but i am thinking that the FMJ will just go clean through and not take one down like we are running into with my buddys AR. Hollow point I think would not have quite the penetration that is needed to reach the vital organs. Soft tip is what I am thinking that I will use to get the most effective kill. What are your thoughts?

Winchester makes a 180 grain that would be just right for that. It runs about $22 or so.

Silver Bear 203 grain soft points would work great on hogs.

The Silver Bear sounds like a good round and it is cheap as well. I will order some of that and try it. Actually, I will order some of the Brown Bear 203grain soft points. I am not sure what the difference is other than the color of the casing.

That's about the only difference.

I ordered 2 boxes of 20 rounds. Setting up 2 hog pipes this weekend so hopefully that will attract all the pigs. I have never used them before but they seem to have good results.

I went out shooting last sunday. I took the new 203g ammo to see how it does. I didnt notice a difference shooting surplus ammo vs the Brown Bear. Maybe its just my bad shooting but I was consistently hitting about a foot high and getting 8in groups at 100yds with both. Thats not really good shooting but at least its close enough to be able to take down a hog. The other thing I wasnt impressed about is the Brown Bear soft points some of them were damaged when I opened the box.

Take the bayonet with you just in case. As to hunting with FMJ's check your local regulations through the local department of natural resources or who ever issues your hunting licenses in your state. if they will punch through steel helmets and people they will punch through "hawgs"

Pardon an old "city slicker" but what's a "hog pipe?" Inquiring minds want to know.

Hog pipes in this case might mean where they intend to funnel the hogs through a certain alley that they can shoot at them. Not having done any hog hunting though i can only speculate. They may be smoking some hog in their hog pipes

Hog pipes, a term used for Harley Davidson aftermarket exhaust systems. I guess if you stick them in the ground, they attract pigs?

A hog pipe or pig pipe is a PVC pipe with holes drilled in it and capped on both ends and chained to the ground. You fill it with corn and the pigs will root around it and push it around letting the corn out of the drilled holes. It keeps them entertained for a while and with a blind set up it brings the pigs to you and gives you plenty of time to line up a good shot.
Here is one in use (not mine). I used a 5ft piece of 3in pipe with a cap on one end and a cleanout on the other where i can fill it with corn.

I didnt get to use the ammo today. I went out early checked the pipe. Nothing has touched it from last Sunday. Only found a couple tracks on the property but it looks like for the moment they have moved on. I will be going back periodical to check it and see if they have found the pipe yet. The cage was tripped and all the corn eaten off the ground but no pig or tracks so I'm guessing field mice ate the bait. Maybe next time I'll have better luck.
