Re: Are we missing anybody?
Some guy with a small gun collection dies , probably of a heart attack, and they have a fit and take his collection. He didn't have that much but if I was the executor of his estate or the beneficiary I would have plenty to say about it .
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Are we missing anybody?
That was in Calif. He wasn't a criminal and was thought to have legally obtained all, some still boxed and with the price tag. If he had heirs, the police owe them every damn one of them(1200) back and every round of the 2 tons of ammo. If this gets hushed up, the NRA needs to step in. I want the rest of the story.....what can we do? SBP

Re: Are we missing anybody?
I can understand the police taking the guns into custody if the house and weapons were not secure and there was no immediate family in the area , however they need to take the utmost care of the firearms and turn them over to his heirs in a timely manner. Problem is at least here in NJ most local police and the county evidence lockers don't give a damn about peoples property and they just throw expensive rifles into a room, where they rust away. NJ State Police is a different story. They actually have respect for residents and their property. I hope family gets collection back in same shape it was taken firearms and ammo.

Re: Are we missing anybody?
I have no issue with securing the weapons, but that should have been left to family.
And the cops not only "secured" them, they are running them to see if any have "been used in a crime."
To my way of thinking, this has become a baseless, warrantless seizure of private property by an instrumentality of the government.
This is outrageous.

Most likely there is no next of kin in this case... Curious to see how this plays out.

Sounds like he was a normal guy.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....
Re: Are we missing anybody?
Yah what is the big deal, if he had 1,200 or 12,000 guns or 600 classic cars.
I would like to know is did they really look for any family before they started carting off stuff and trucking it off to wherever???????

Re: Are we missing anybody?
I have seen similar situations play out in less callous and bighted states and usually it takes forever and guns seem to disappear and are stored carelessly. The survivor's need to get a very active lawyer and have him start suing the hell out of the state and police authorities or these weapons will just sort of disappear over a period of time. Seen this happen almost in NJ but the wife made a lucky call to a friend and he had them out of state in no time. What guns? Taken care of already in a legal manner with a licensed dealer too. Thank You. Only safe way to deal with authorities in NJ.
If they can't find them or have no evidence they exist they just can get search warrants but for the most part not in other states.
Another time the occasion was a divorce case in Delaware and the man owner was living at home. That really can get nasty but quick removal helped again and what they don't know about won't always hurt the gun owner most times. Make them go away quick is the best and most simple way. Amazing how the media can bend things around and blatantly lie about stuff never even making a retraction. Poor guy never got to sell his major investment in life his gun collection and now in death idiots are attempting to stain his reputation. Shame we have complete idiots in power in the wrong places. Re: Are we missing anybody?
So they find this guy in a car presumably w/a traceable license plate, he lived w/somebody or at least had a steady gf who's retained a lawyer over this and I assume spent an occasional night over w/him at his pad, has neighbors for 17 years who know some of the tall tales he's supposedly been spinning ...and no one even knows his real name? I ain't buyin' it.
Here's the LA Times article. Seems the media is portraying him as a nut job. No surprises there.
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html
"Sgt. David Craig of the LAPD's gang and narcotics division... said investigators removed the weapons to ensure the ammunition and guns wouldn't be stolen from the home."
^ Yeah, right. And just how many are unaccounted for and now the personal property of LAPD employees?
Furthermore, if you look at the video there's numerous precision systems and handguns of various types in the haul(unless that's stock footage). Bet your bottom dollar LAPD's going to do all they can to keep them in their own arsenal.
I had my car broken into once and the thief overlooked a pocket auto I had locked in the glove box. All 100% legal. The cops got there first, put it in evidence, and did EVERYTHING they could to keep me from getting it back. They even lied and told me it was a .25 and not a .22(which it was) in order to discredit my claim to it. Took 2 months and I finally had a lawyer get involved just as they threw their hands up in exhaustion.
Those guns out in LA won't see the light of day for at least a year or two.

Alright, more recent article via Drudge Report. His ol' lady ID'd him as Jeffrey Alan Lash. And- There was almost 1/4 mil in cash at the place too. LADP is licking their chops over this. They're claiming the guns are worth 5 million. That's probably trumped up. They're going to find the slightest excuse for civil forfeiture on that loot and run w/it.

I can hear it now: "The important thing is that we kept these guns off the streets."

Re: Are we missing anybody?
This speaks for itself. I just pulled it:
"President Barack Obama has admitted that his failure to pass 'common sense gun safety laws' in the US is the greatest frustration of his presidency.
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Obama said it was "distressing" not to have made progress on the issue "even in the face of repeated mass killings".
He vowed to keep trying, but the BBC's North America editor Jon Sopel said the president did not sound very confident."
Meanwhile, the late owner of what is being described as "a weapons cache" has been identified (as explained, above), and the MM is doing all it can to characterize him as some sort of marginalized nut job. Silly me. I've never seen a collection of historically significant weapons as a "cache."
I suspect that this will all come to a head after I have gone for the Big Dirt Nap, but come to a head it will.

sign of the times. The Progressives are drooling... Anyone who has a collection should have their ducks in a row a long time before they pass.

Re: Are we missing anybody?
We fixed that problem here in Arizona. State law prohibits the destruction of firearms seized by law enforcement or purchased through government authorized buy backs (except for ones that have been illegally modified). Upon disposition of a criminal case, the firearms are required to be sold at auction. The same goes for buy back firearms. Participation in the auctions is restricted to 01 FFLs. Private organizations can fund buy backs, but if law enforcement is involved in any way (even to compare serial numbers to lists of stolen firearms), the state law kicks in. Frankly, I doubt that any of our local agencies accept surrendered firearms except from people who are under court order to turn them in.

Re: Are we missing anybody?
"Wait, did we say 1200? Actually there are only 950. Why, yes, that is a brand new Sig in my holster."
So now the gov gets to automatically confiscate the firearms and ammo of any guy who passes away? Doesn't matter if it's 1 gun or 1200 - they simply have no legal basis to seize or even investigate. Unlawful. Waste of taxpayer money. I sincerely hope the next of kin is hot on this. I hope the NRA is hot on this issue as it looks to set a precedent. The gov in California is constantly looking to restrict people's gun rights any way they can.
Good reminder for us all to document our holdings and square away our affairs before we go.
