Return of the SKS
Return of the SKS
I made a phone deal a few days ago for a Tula SKS for $350.00. When we met in a fast food parking lot, the Tula had Chinese script and Norinco stamped on it. Now I knew the Russians and Chinese were close during the cold war, but that was ridiculous........
I bought the rifle anyway and paid $350.00. I also got 600 rounds of Tula, a bunch of accessories and a .22 derringer that I would't have given $10.00 for. The ammo made it a fair deal. The rifle is all matching and in beautiful condition. I believe it to be a fairly early Chinese rifle, but I haven't studied these. I haven't had an SKS since I bought and quickly traded one in the late 1990s, and I have had the itch for one again.

Think of all the cool police vehicles you would get to see, maybe even the APC
Not a bad deal, what kind of derringer?

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Return of the SKS
I think you did great. What is the value of the Tula ammo? At 5 bucks a box that would be 150.00! Yep you stole this deal. I want to see what the experts have to say about the rifle itself. You should post some more pictures. Sweet deal on a fun shooter
Re: Return of the SKS
It was not my intention to spend $350.00 on a Chinese SKS, but with all of the sweetener, I couldn't help myself.bunkysdad wrote:I think you did great. What is the value of the Tula ammo? I pulled it out for disassembly, inspection and cleaning today and it was immaculate inside as well as out. I must not have more than a handful of ammo shot through it. It was quite dirty with burned powder which had been there for 15 years with no pitting of the bore or the gas system. I guess that gives Tula ammo a clean bill of health.
I fixed the .22 Italian derringer today, so now its value has gone from $5.00 to $7.50. I shot two short rounds with it and now it can sit in the safe waiting for a buy-back.
The SKS gurus tell me that it is a PLA 1973 build. I will not be installing a bayonet because it is just not clear whether it could get me a room in a government run, five star prison. I am far to pretty to go to jail, and I am too cheap to want to make lawyers rich, win lose or draw, with me as the guest of honor at a trial.
Tomorrow gets it gets a trip to the range.

It is clear to me. I put bayonets on both my Norinco SKS rifles. Re: Return of the SKS
Out here, that might pass as normal. A year or so ago, the "Moms" made a big fuss about the local transit agency permitting guns on the buses after a passenger brought an uncased AR-15 on a Sun Tran bus. There was no incident and no police call out. Sun Tran told the "Moms" (correctly) that as long as the gun owner is acting responsibly, they (Sun Tran) cannot prohibit the gun owner from riding. State law preemption prohibits municipalities from enacting local ordinances that are more restrictive than the state law.Junk Yard Dog wrote:911 what's the nature of your emergency-

Re: Return of the SKS
Living in the gunshine state, and in a more rural part of the state, two old men, handling rifles in a Zaxby's parking lot, is not something people normally get their panties in a wad about. Even at that, the exchange was done in an expedient manner, the terms of the exchange were sorted out, in grand Southern style, over a chicken dinner, prior to the exchange. If someone reviewed the parking lot film, so be it; I made the exchange there because there arestore and parking lot cameras, and a lot of traffic.awalker1829 wrote:Out here, that might pass as normal. Bought my most recent SKS from the back of a pick-up truck on the street in this wonderful free state.

All 50 states have worries about terrorism, and everyone knows that old farts are dangerous. Cranky, unpredictably short tempered ' cause something always hurts, and notoriously difficult to please at fast food places. They actually expect good service and the food to look as advertised. The pimple face kid at the drive up window sees old fart and "gun" he's going to shit himself thinking you are coming back to start the " where's the beef" argument again this time to finish him off.

Re: Return of the SKS
I took this rifle to the range today and it performed as good as it looks. The best three shot group I made from 65 yards could be covered by a quarter. I should have quit at that point.
It does what it is supposed to if I do what I am supposed to. With the new eyes, I can see the target well, but the sights are a bear. I think I have healed up enough to go get some prescription glasses, then, look out!
My son brought his Saiga for comparison, and except for the Saiga trigger being a bit better, the two rifles were very competitive.

Re: Return of the SKS
I think my 300 buck Norinco SKS is more accurate than the 800 dollar Saiga-based AK. I shoot routinely at 200 yards with good results. You are right; the sights are the weak link on these rifles. Looks like you have an earlier threaded barrel. I have one threaded and one pinned barrel Norinco. Both are probably late 80's or early 90's vintage and never saw any combat. Both shoot equally well.
Re: Return of the SKS
Some of the folks who seem to know a bunch about these told me that this one was either a '73 or a '74 rifle. The barrel is pinned, not threaded. It was a lot of fun shooting it today; it has been a long time.tjtM38 wrote:I think my 300 buck Norinco SKS is more accurate than the 800 dollar Saiga-based AK. You're kidding me right? In the South? 9/10 people, dogs, and Democrats here were born, raised, and are accustomed to guns in cars. I do not know Florida's laws, but I've never had issues with the Feds. And I sent an email to Degtyarev last year concerning the PTRD-41. Russian was shit, I doubt they could read it. Point being the same, I had no problems.Junk Yard Dog wrote:All 50 states have worries about terrorism, and everyone knows that old farts are dangerous. The gun rack died years ago, but the Browning A-5 in the backseat did not. Most officers are fine with them, as long as they are announced and unloaded. Those that aren't ask a few questions, then you're on your way just fine.
Also, the pimply faced kids don't shit down both legs like we used to. I've personally had to deal with socialists, football players, and other so called problems.
And we hate crappy service as much as you. Some things never change.
Things could be worse. Work to keep from finding out how much worse.
Re: Return of the SKS
In the north where I am thats a good deal all day. I would have done the deal without batting an eye. My SKS is an 80's polytech with a PU scope mount and ultralux scope Ive been told that was added by the importer. I have trouble finding paper at 100 yards with it....and its counterbored!!
...my parking lot buy was an unused '83 Mossberg ATP. Cycled it a few times and paid the 200 bucks. That was at my place of employment, broad daylight, and I live in NY...

Please pick your answer from the following;
1) Face to face deals in New York are best done in the dark?
2) Face to face deals in New York are best done at a very crowded concert?
3) Face to face deals in New York are best done in Pennsylvania?

Re: Return of the SKS
Socialists are rarely a problem, our version doesn't care for guns so they are easy to dispatch when needed, football players aren't a problem either, their life is about games, worry about the quiet little guy in the corner , he's probably a serial killer, or a heavy hitter for the Mob. Of course pimply faced kids shit down both legs when life gets real, they are kids lacking life experience and have never faced anything real before. That's just part of growing up, the Old Man will tell you what he did the first time he came under German artillery fire, shit his parts, he's not kidding either, pretty much every kid and other FNG in his outfit did. 19 years old and suddenly walking into hell for the first time, you would be shitting yourself also.rayjd2 wrote:You're kidding me right? Re: Return of the SKS
I recently got word that our Sherrif's office has had 5 calls about a man in a small black truck on the side of the highway in different places with a Rifle! (Me). Some have heard shots fired! OMG...I live in a rural county in the NC Smoky Mtns. I can understand this being a concern if I was in downtown Charlotte, but people have grown used to not seeing people with rifles, and associating people with rifles being a bad thing, even in Hillbilly land. I hope to inspire more guys to do the same, and maybe people realize it's not usually a bad thing to see, and not illegal. When they see men dropping from the sky in parachutes with rifles, I hope they say "I wish the man in the black truck was here" I do my trading at Burger King...... SBP
