New m44 cleaning

Post by dalefan88 »

Bought my first Mosin that was straight from the crate. It's a m44. Man I didn't know what a pain it is to get all the cosmoline off. It will be worth it. Hope it's as fun to shoot as my t53.

I took a 20 gauge wire brush to it. Still see alittle in it. Hope it don't make the bolt stick. It's all numbers matching accept the butt plate.

That type 53 was probably three times are greasy if it was like some I have seen, unless you bought it from someone who had cleaned it already.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Use an old toothbrush with WD-40 or Hoppes inside the chamber, followed with a patch mop. Repeat until clean patches come out. You'll get sticky bolt if you fire it with any cosmoline left in there.
Do it before firing or it will be a Bitch from hell to clean later......SBP

You could always clean it like you shot corrosive, pour some nice hot water down the bore. That always works well for me. Heats up the grease and makes it much easier to get out, even the old dried up stuff.

Congratulations on the new rifle! You need to post up some photos for all of us!!
