M1873 Trapdoor

Post by rayjd2 »

I just got one for $650 OTD, wood is a little chewed up near the buttplate, rifling is visible, metal is strong with good bluing. Finish overall is fine. Sound mechanically.

I got this and a M1898 for $1600 flat.

Lets see some photos! 8-) 8-) 8-) ....D

OK, now you have to re-load for it (well, you don't "have to" but that 1/2 the fun!).

NIce! 8-) So where's the pix? I'd definitely suggest reloading for that trapdoor.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Broken firing pin. It's not good, but it's repairable. Sheared in half in two places.

So it's in thirds…

A normal trapdoor problem, these pins were prone to breakage like that. This I have seen before more than once.

Ordering one from Dixie Gun Works, thought I'd support the Homeland.

They've got a Spanish Rolling Block if anyone's interested...

The stock is a bit banged up, but I think it will hold up to firing. I'm quite pleased!

Last thing I've found.

Rifle was made in 1889, stock in 1884. :D

Rear sight spring is gone, but they're fairly cheap. So I think I did pretty well at $650 OTD needing a firing pin and spring! :chuckles: :chuckles: :chuckles:

Ok, I'm trying to order parts. The rifle had a firing pin with an oval cutout, but all the M1873 pins I've found have a square ground patch where the screw holds the pin in. Which do I get??

And the sight spring should be the regular M1873 leaf spring, right?

Your rifle has the second type firing spring pin. Numrich lists both, but is currently out of both. I'd keep checking with them, and Sarco.

Yes, the spring is the same for all. Numrich is out of them currently also. Keep checkin'!
