1898 Early Configuration Izhevsk M91

I purchased this 1898 Izhevsk from a guy who showed it in a Facebook Mosin Nagant collectors forum last week. It is an early configuration M91 with no recoil bolt and no sling slots in the stock and the original flat rear sight. The stock has not been sanded or refinished and the original cartouche is still awesomely visible and intact. It has areas of wonderful aged patina on the magazine, bolt handle, butt plate and nose cap, but otherwise is in fantastic condition including the bore which is just amazing with sharp rifling and very bright - particularly for a rifle more that is 117 years old. The magazine sling swivel pin must have broken at some point and a modern stop-gap repair was done and the rear barrel band pin end is snapped off. Other than that, the rifle appears to be in very good condition given its age and has escaped all upgrades and modifications other than that the cleaning rod appears to be Japanese likely indicating the rifle was captured during the Japanese-Russo conflict. The bolt cocking knob is not original - it is Tula marked and the floorplate serial number doesn't match, but has been with the rifle for a very, very long time as the patina is consistent with the rest of the magazine housing and other areas of patina on the rifle. I'm excited to have this rifle and hope you all enjoy checking it out.

This looks like the kind of rifle that Martin 08 might find in a yard sale along with a solid gold horseshoe! I think you have done well here in the area of hard to find rifles. How did the seller list it? Did he know what he had? Did he still it as an antique without requiring a FFL? AWESOME FIND

He knew what it was and how much it was worth. Posted links to Gun Boards threads about Martin's in fact while he was talking about it. Shipped straight to me as an antique.

With very few specimens still wearing their original parts, this rifle does answer the question as to whether the three major arsenals were consistently placing their buttplate numbers on the rear of the buttplate or the upper tang. Seems that the Tula arsenal was still stamping the serial on the rear of the plate as late as 1900, but Izhevsk had them on the upper tang as early as 1898.

Excellent evidence of the Japanese connection, too. Congrats

I'm telling you, all but two of my rifles I found on Facebook local gun buy/sell groups or Mosin forums... There's so many Mosin groups I can't keep track of them all. I drive between Louisiana and Ohio a lot so I even join the state specific Mosin groups along my route. Happy hunting! [emoji2]

Next time you are in the Cincinnati area take five and stop by the Old Milford Gun Shop in Milford, Ohio. You can visit the 1895 Winchester that had Miller drooling before he chased one down that was for sale.
