Anyone Own A Marlin Model 60SB

Post by BubbaDX »

I've been planning to buy my daughter a 22 for her birthday. Well, her birthday is next month and I still have not decided which one I want to get. While at WalMart the other day I noticed they have a Marlin Model 60SB. This model has the stainless barrel and walnut stock, its a very nice looking 22. My only concern is the lack of aftermarket parts for it. Anyone have a Model 60? I have seen reports of them being picky about bulk ammo and such, but it seems most people that have them love them. For reference, here is the Marlin I am looking at getting:

I have had a model 60 for 20-30 years, I have had probably five or six, passed a few on to friends of mine, they are the most common of .22 rifles. Parts are available from Marlin, and Numrich arms. There is nothing revolutionary about the 60, it's been around fifty years, they don't break easily, and are a simple design. Simple tube magazine, stock sized for an adult, I would skip all that fancy stainless if a blued one is available. The 60 uses an aluminum receiver, that means they plate it for the stainless model, one scratch and that plating is bubbling off. Any gunshop in America can get you a Model 60, if you find someone selling a used .22 in the local classifieds chances are it's a model 60. I probably have 10,000+ rounds out of the one I have. The Model 60 is good just the way it is from Marlin, it needs no aftermarket parts to work correctly, and it will easily mount a scope.

I have the regular version. Never planned on modifying it so I never looked at other parts. I actually loaned that one to my ex wife just so she would have something. I saw that stainless one in Walmart today. It was a nice looking rifle. I just bought another 10/22 or I might have had to get it. I never really had any issues with mine. A couple of busted cases but I think it was the Golden bullets ammo and not the rifle.

Thanks. I am really leaning toward this Marlin. The stainless barrel and hardwood stock really make a nice looking rifle. I think this will be easy for my daughter to load also. She does not like loading magazines.

And you don't have to worry about buying spare mags.

I have a model 60 special edition that my uncle found in a river while scuba diving years ago. I refinished the surface rotted stock, stripped rust from the pitted barrel, cleaned out the receiver, replaced the rusted and broken magazine tube and the lost rear sight slide. Still looks ugly because the barrel is too pitted to re-blue but the stock looks fine. The bore isn't pitted but has little to no rifling. My uncle brought it over years ago when I was about 15. They were about to toss it as a piece of junk but the action still worked despite being packed with mud so I asked to keep it and restore it. It sat in the garage for a while but I eventually got around to doing all that. It works but jams a lot. I think its the ammo though because it was jamming in my other marlin too.
I believe in the right to arm bears.

Marlin 60s are very common we have 3 in the used rack at the shop and good shooters so I am told. My ex bought me one for my birthday in 1985, it has never been loaded much less fired. Millman has been threatening to steal it and shoot it for 3 or 4 years.

That's funny Chuck, the 60 I kept was one I bought from a customer, he got it as a gift maybe ten years before I got it and never fired it. I took care of that .

Marlin 60s are great. No, they aren' t as modible as a 10/22, but they don't need to be, as I have found they shoot better out of the box. Give the gift of a M60 with confidence.

I have 2 60s, one about 50 years old, one about 30 years old. The older one has a long history of abuse and it will still eat anything I throw at it. Grandfather in law bought it new in 1968 or thereabouts, he made a bunch of speed loaders for it and used it in family "mad minute" competitions for many years.

Here is my Marlin 60SB. Actually, after I bought it my wife claimed ii is hers. So be it. She loves to shoot it and being 80 years old she does very well. It has been dependable and accurate. It came with the scope. I bought it at Walmart.

That is the one I am looking at. Man that is a nice looking 22. I might drop by WalMart again today and see if its still there. If not, maybe they can order another one.

I have a stainless Marlin 60 with a matching silver Simmons scope. It's been great so far. I replaced the trigger and trigger guard with a silver aluminum one. I bought my wife a pink Ruger 10/22 and she still likes the Marlin 60 better. Women...........

I went back to WalMart today and there was someone at the gun counter so I asked to see the Marlin. They only had this one in stock but I can see no handling marks or scuffs. Marlin 60SB it is. I bought it and will add a pack of 22LR to the box. This is a very nice looking gun. It does not have the dark wood grain like the one wolfstein posted, but is a very nice looking stock. Ill post a couple pictures before I seal it up for my daughter's birthday.

I have three and have given away three others to my son's. I think they are more accurate then the 10/22 and will eat any thing you feed them. You won't be sorry.

I will take a model 60 over a 10/22 any day of the week..My brother got a marlin 60 about 30 years ago, and we shot the living hell out of it.. it still shoots just fine.. Love the old tube fed, i hate the butler creek clips for 10/22.. out of the box..for the price...i will take the tube fed every time.. Dependable machine the model 60 is.

Change the feed throat and recoil spring and it'll run like new. The rifling on these is called 'micro-groove' and you can barely see it even when new

There is also a trick called the nickel, or the quarter, or some such, where one bends the ejector spring using a coin for a gauge, that will help certain ejection issues. Check rimfire central for the specifics. I have found rimfire central to be a very good source for all things .22.
