May 1942 Springfield M1 Garand

Took me a couple of years to get around to doing it but I finally sent my paperwork into the CMP so that I can buy ammo and rifles from them. I sent in my request for a service grade rifle on the 13th of January and this showed up on February 9th!
From what I've been able to figure out, it's a May 1942 Springfield with a replacement barrel from October of 1944. Most of the internal parts are Springfield, though not original. Most are from late war time to post war. All of the parts however are in absolutely fantastic condition with a nice green park on them all. There are only two non-Springfield parts, the trigger housing which is a 43 or later Winchester and the gas cylinder lock screw which is HRA stamped (looks brand new). The stock is also a replacement and has the National Defense Eagle stamped on it. It has a few knicks here and there but overall is in good shape. The muzzle gauges 1+ and the throat 2+.
So for my first rifle from the CMP, I certainly can't complain. I wanted a wartime Springfield and that's exactly what I got. Took it to the range this weekend to try out and it did pretty good. First shot was about 1/4" low from the bullseye at 50 yards. Good way to start. Here's some photos for you guy's to look at.
Right side of the rifle. I like the wood grain on this side much more than the left.
Not that I dislike the left side, just a bit less interesting to me.
6 digit Springfield. Serial dates to May of 1942. 30 years and a month older than me.
Left side again showing the National Defense Eagle stamp on the stock.
There were a couple layers of tape and paint on the bottom of the pistol grip. When they came off, the number 16 was there staring at me.
I believe the gas cylinder is a Springfield, though I may be incorrect.

You done very well for an ordered rifle. Pickings are very slim at the store now and has been for a long while so ordering is the way to go.
Very nice, I'd like to have another in that date range.

As far as I know the barrel shows the only date. Going to the CMP forum web site posted in your M1 Garand posting earlier will help you trace the serial numbers of parts giving each a date. Even the large receiver number will lead you to a date.... I'm guessing the cost of this rifle ordered at around $700 and I'd love to have it for that price.
Pureform, I think you got a heck of a deal on yours and just don't know it yet.

I'm hooked for sure. I would like to get at least one more, a late HRA would be good. Then again maybe a Winchester and an International Harvester as well

The CMP just recently raised their prices, the service grade was $730 shipped. The lower "Field Grade" are currently $630 shipped to your door. For the internals, I've been dating them using various sources. I like books and generally will buy a couple on every rifle that I have. I picked up a couple for the Garand that were pretty good but a lot of the dating of parts I've also been finding online as well. I don't have exact dates for a lot of the internals but have at least some good ball parks. This web page:
http://usriflecal30m1.com/Production.aspx is a good starting point. From this site, you can also find out what the "correct" parts for the rifle would have been stamped with.

Thanks, I really can't complain at all about what they sent to me. I would have liked to have gone to the store and picked one out myself but as good of condition as this one is, I doubt I would have done any better. I wouldn't mind getting a receiver and building up a good "match" type shooter with new barrel etc. Won't do that with this one but if I find a decent receiver at a show or what not, I might pick it up and see if I can do it.

I have the late model H&R and would love to own the one you just received... Ordering CMP by mail is kind of scary, I've seen and read a few horror stories. You done very very well with your purchase..

The only serial number on an M1 is on the receiver and the only date will be on the barrel . Most of the other parts will display lot numbers . Parts went through changes throughout M1 production. As the part changed , so did the lot numbers.

That 1943 Springfield of yours is a great looking and shooting rifle too! You were shooting circles around me yesterday!

That's a great looking CMP service grade! When trying to ID the internal parts I just put the part lot number in the google search window and normally something will come up to help me date what I'm looking for. Congrats on a beautiful Garand!

The numbers on the parts are drawing numbers, I could go into a long winded explanation of what they are but Scott Duff has done it for me

Thanks for that link JYD. I had come across that site and bookmarked it but my laptop took a dump two weeks ago and I lost a bunch of my good links. Spent a while again going through his site and wound up buying a couple more books too. Can never have enough to read!

That's about the nicest grained wood I've ever seen on a older M1 Garand, I ran across one a while back for sale at $800 that was close but it had lighter colored hand guard replacement.

Thanks Jbob. I was hoping for an original stock with this one, asking for a lot on a CMP I know! I was pretty happy with this late replacement though. I really like the grain on it too, more on the right than the left but its a looker from either direction! This rifle will do just fine for my wartime example!
