What hurts, what works, and what do you use?
Two parameters:
A) Legal hunting ammo only, ie if your state/province/nation requires expanding rounds, don't say FMJ.
B) Game size varies across the world. Specify what kinds of animals these categories describe to /you/.
Edit: I know that every caliber is effective against something. Just preempting that one.
1) Small game
2) Medium game
3) Large game
4) Dangerous game

For ground squires out here (southern Oregon) we use any 22lr round. HP or LRN doesn't matter.
For deer we use 30-30 in the 50 to 100 yard range. Remington core-lokt 150 soft point is a game getter.
For deer out to 500 yards I use my 30-06. 150grn soft point. I like Hornady white tail or Remington core-lokt. (just remember that at 500 yards your hold over is around 78 inches or so depending on your rifle and scope set up if your zero is 100 yards)
For Elk / Bear I still use the 30-06 but with 220grn Federal power-shok. Soft point and yes it drops a bear dead in it's tracks.
For deadly game, depends if you talking 2 legged or 4 legged. If it's 4 legged get yourself a .375 H&H Mag. If it's a 2 legged kind, 12 gauge hands down.
Note- The most important thing to remember is shot placement. I have killed many a thing with nothing more than a 22lr rifle because that all I had with me (I live and work on a ranch). Coyotes, Mountain lions and a rabid dog to name a few.
Mods: sorry if it's a no-no to mention brand names, but these are what I use.
