1936 Tula 91/30 SA/Finn PUOLUSTUSLAITOS

Post by SavageDennis »

I'll bet that got a few people attention..lol

It's been a while since I've been around the forums & have missed it here. I'm back looking for verification/identification of what I think may be a fairly uncommon variant.

The pics are all I have to go on. Ammo and bent bolt included. Have no fear, I'll burn the stock..lol. I'll be picking it up next week. So going off of what is seen in the pics, can anyone verify that this in fact a "PUOLUSTUSLAITOS "Defense Department" which was only used for two months in 1942 before being replaced with the "boxed SA". "

I welcome any and all information, valuation, opinions and general 'how ya doin's'.

I have spoken to a couple of friends who know more about them than I and the value has ranged from 500-1K because it's on a 91/30 and not a finn produced rifle. Is that in line with what i am seeing here.

That one might be worth trying to bring back. Usually see the PL mark on M39's and M91's little uncommon for a 91/30. Hex receiver 36 is pretty cool too, how much ammo is included? Gonna need a pre war stock and a different bolt body. After all is said and done it will still be a stateside put together PL marked 91/30, not sure what the value would be. Damm bubba always picks the nice ones to work his magic.

BTW welcome back.

I agree, it's definitely worth saving. There are 320 rounds of non corrosive that come with it. Bubba must have had an off day & gratefully so for us. Looks like he didnt cut it down, just a stock swap. Sadly the original is just a ghost in the wind now.

Damned good to be back.

After I i thin out the blood in my coffee system I'll post some pics of the sweet 02 Hungarian m44 I picked up. Non arsenal refurb, as issued 02 on every single piece of metal, 100% numbers matching and all that sweet stuff.

It will probably get moved to the sportster section. It's definitely one worth saving but the value won't be anywhere near what you were quoted IMO. Saves like this will never be worth what an un-messed with one is worth, and the value you were quote seems high even for a PL marked 91/30 in "as imported" condition.

Yeah, the value you mentioned is somebody's dream. If you can get it right, and I mean cheap, then I'd go for it. Don't educate the seller unless he is trying to sell you something that isn't here. I would not pay more than the price of a refurb, then add some for the ammo. But that is just me.

I would not pay $500 for this.

I would. ( pay $500.00 ) As long as SavageDennis did the restoration in a complete "like original" manner and the rifle had an excellent bore that had not been counter-bored. Hey, that's just me, I find that PL mark just fascinating along with the additional boxed SA.

I would look for a finned 91/30 stock for it. It would be worth $400 to someone with that stock on it. IMHO. :2cents:

I figure for $250 I'm in it right. Another 200ish on the stock/hardware if I can fins a Finn and I'll be bumping retail for it. I'll recoup some coin out of the synthetic stock & bent bolt. So I should be ok in the end. I'd love to find a Finn'd stock for it but that's not very likely, so i'll most likely go with a nice pre war that fits the '36/Tula aspect.

The pictures aren't good, but it appears the bolt may be original that was then bent. If so, I'd send pictures to both of the main Mosin bolt guys and see if they can straighten it out.

Scanning the pics i see that it's D stamped for the chamber reaming for the Finnish D166 round and what looks like an early Izhevsk arsenal stamp on the bolt connector. I also notice there is no S prefix on the serial number. Nor do I spy the 41 stamp often found on these. What can that say about it's use in the defense dept. and or where it was or wasn't issued?

also, i read that the boxed sa stamp replaced the Puolustuslaitos. This appears to have both, what gives? A late/crossover stamping or??

Sometimes they just turn up with both stamps. The Puolustuslaitos mark originally, then later for whatever reason, the SA stamp. Such is the case with my recent M39 Sako purchase.

I would love to educate the seller & let the M@therF#cker know what the retail value was on the rifle BEFORE the B@st@rd tossed the stock & bent the bolt. I would then offer him $75 to take the poor beast off his stupid hands.

But seriously, get it as dirt Freaking cheap as you can... Then once the deal is done let him know what a bad thing he did. Sorry if I'm cranky, mix seeing this, suffering from the flu & having to work through New Years. :angry4:

I get the rifle and 320 rounds of non corrosive for $250. I see that as a pretty danged good buy on this one. Hell at 415 a box, thats $240 in ammo alone. I'll probably get another $40 out of the plastic abomination & use that towards the restoration/stock costs

Would an M28/30 be a correct or acceptable stock for this one or should i go with a standard pre war 91/30 stock?

In a pre war stock what would a general ball park value run?
