I was at the range yesterday with my PU Sniper...a guy came over to me and said he use to have one some years back but he hated the optics too outdated for him. He asked me if you could re-place the old scope with a modern 30mm vortex scope , i had no idea if it was possible or if the rings are 30mm? Can this be done...

As long as the rings fit the eye relief is good any scope would work...

the rings on a PU are 30mm?

I just measured my PU scope & it came out to 29mm.

Thanks! ...I'll have to measure mine if you got 29mm its a good bet the extra mm is there to push it to 30.

You know what, yesterday I just grabbed my calipers & measured the tube close to the turrets. If memory serves me correct the eyepiece is just slightly bigger than the main tube. If I remember this afternoon I will pull the PU out again & take another measurement.

Geez- he could just get the SureFire PU scope and mount! (Where is that puking smiley?!) I saw this abomination at SG yesterday when SWMBO took me there for my BD. (I got Guide Gear jeans for work-yea!) I didn't have my phone with, or I'd have a pic, but it was as cheezy as hell!

It's my impression that he just wants to replace the PU tube scope with a modern 30mm scope. It's not a permanent modification so I see no problem with doing so.

No one has really answered the question..... " what size are the rings on the original PU Scope" ???????????? If they are less then 30mm its probably not possible to put on a modern Vortex scope.

Can't help you out with that. The PU scope is 29mm. I'm not taking my scope out of the rings to check what their measurement is. You've got a PU so I would suggest you get yourself a digital caliper & take a measurement or wait until someone else comes along who knows the answer. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

SG= Sportsman's Guide. I live close enough to it to drive to the Liquidation Store on special occasions, like my-

Yes, Titanium Hammer, I know putting a Vortex scope in a PU mount (Assuming no dremel or file work) is non-modifying, I just was commenting on the esthetics. That and if Bubba G. Smith sees it, he just might attempt something similar that would modify one.

I hear you entropy, whatever goes in there besides a tube scope will look rather hideous but to each his own I guess. The main problem that I see is that the 91/30 scope mount is pretty much made to accept only tube scopes since the screws are only on one side of the rings & really don't allow the rings to open up enough to put a modern non tube scope in there to my knowledge.

There are modern tube scopes out there. Every scopes pellet gun has one. Although I don't think they'd handle the 7.62x54r recoil, they're out there.

I don't know, but I do LOVE Vortex Optics.
