Hi I came across a yugo capture k98 mauser. Can I get some history behind these?

I've had two russian captures but never a yugo. It is stamped model 98 on the receiver but had the yugo crest and factory 44. So what all did the yugos do to these? It's all 3 digit matching, is this german matching or did the yugos force match the numbers like the Russians did? Gun is in excellent condition 9/10 still in cosmoline.

No front hood or cleaning rod. Has stock disk.

These are 100% german ww2 mausers but captured by the yugos and symbols pinged correct?

Thanks!

Yes they were force matched similar to the Russian mosins. The markings were scrubbed, not peaned. Some of them, mine included, still have the factory markings partially visible.

I'm not much help on history, I think I read somewhere that most of them were received as reparation from the war. I also think I read somewhere that the Yugos rebarrelled them as part of their refurbishment process.

Thank you for your response.

So I would have myself a nazi rifle with a new yugo barrel! Sweet

What about headspace? Since they are forced matched, do you think head space is fine?

1. Headspace any milsurp, you don't know who did what.

2. Unless you have Nazi waffenampts stamped on the rifle, you just have a 98 model Mauser.

Why not consider it a german/yugo k98? Just because the markings were scrubbed still doesn't take away the fact it was used by Germany and made in Germany.

For the most part, the Yugoslavs sanitized the German markings off of them, so you cannot tell what make most of these captured Yugo K98s are. 1937 BSW or 44 BNZ? Can't tell because they were scrubbed, force-matched with new numbers and re-arsenaled.

These are excellent rifles. Essentially K98s made post war so they saw little use. The Yugoslavians made Mausers before the war, then Germans took over and used their factories for K98s. Post war the Yugos got their factories back and made these rifles from a mixture of K98s given to them and parts still sitting in the factories. Of course they also got back into making their own Mausers too.

They're all very nicely force matched via a scrub and restamp. You usually find very light evidence of German markings on them.

If anyone in SE Michigan interested I found a good deal on one locally but already own two and have other things I'mputting the money towards.
