Vz2008 with a little package twist, updated!

I finally got my paws on one, and not one you would find everyday  I picked this up recently for a real nice price of 400 bucks, and what it lacks compared to the normal CAI Vz2008 package, it makes up for in a little versatility. The seller had the complete fixed stock set included with the rifle  , which I would have tried to find anyway if I got a folder version. I'm not much on the folders and like how my Vz58 fits. Only two mags were included, it would have been the perfect dream package if it would have had the standard 5 magazines with the pouch, but I can always pick that up later to round it out. And the usual bayonet/scabbard, complete cleaning kit and sling were also included. The stock looks to be a true surplus stock and is slightly darker than the rest of the bakelite parts, its marked with paint on both sides and the hardware has some surface rust, but that should clean off with no problems. I'm planning on swapping the folder for the fixed stock sometime this week :o , and actually sitting my CzechPoint D-Techics built Vz58 side-by-side with this Vz2008 and doing a little comparison between the two. Something that has had me wondering about for quite a while, I know my Vz58 has a chrome bore, this version doesn't, which to me, is no big deal.

I'll post some more photos after the fixed stock conversion and possibly a few later during the comparison between the two versions/builders.

Sweet! Been wishing I could get one of these. Also have been curious how they compare to the more expensive vz58. Also how they compare when shooting, accuracy and such.

Oh, yea, the shooting and accuracy parts. I'm gonna get to that as well once I get some time. That's the fun part

Hey that will fit right in with your collection. I know you have a lot x39 firearms, so how are you stocked up on ammo Carl? The only problem I have with shooting x39 is having a good place to shoot fmj, so I try to buy up HP ammo when I can. Such if the life of a out if place city boy. Ilk be looking forward to the next round of pictures.

Russell, I got 500 rounds of HP from Sgammo for about $130.
I haven't gotten out to shoot mine yet. But I did order 4 more mags for it. So I should be set there. I debated getting a fixed stock for it. But dang it folds up so nice and short.

Ammo, you never have enough in my opinion, in my wifes opinion, "what, you planning on suppling a third world nation or something" :chuckles: Yea, I gotta lot of mouths to feed, might look at a bolt action x39 next, they eat slower.

I got the folder off, the surplus stock fit perfectly. So for those wondering, a standard issue Czech Vz58 fixed stock will fit a CAI Vz2008 just fine. Just be forewarned, the folder stock bolt I think was threadlocked and then tightened by KingKong himself, it was TIGHT. :big shock: Took multiple beatings with an impact driver to get it to move, and also to keep it moving, nothing was harmed or broke. I'll post a couple of good photos tomorrow of the conversion, now that it's done.

But for now, here is a cheapie teaser cellphone shot after.

Here is the end result of the conversion. The sling has the Czech stamp and year, which I thought was cool. And people complain about CAI billboard stamps, they did the other side twice, once on the sight block, once again on the receiver :bang: The butt stock is very light and hollow, except for a center reinforcement, which also doubles as the rear sling retainer and butt plate attachment.

And for those interested, I figured I'd spring an extra comparison out there as well, a Vz to an Ak quick and dirty comparison  . As you can see, they are two totally different weapons, absolutely nothing in common, other than they can both hold 30rds. The gas piston for the Ak moves the complete length, where the Vz gas piston moves just over 1/2 an inch, the actual gas system works much like an SKS. The Vz also has some slight similarity to a Hakim, Mas 49/56 and/or SKS looking at the bolt carrier design, but top spring is the recoil spring, bottom smaller spring is actually the hammer spring. The actual bolt itself and bolt locking method, is I'd guess is the Czechs own design, small and simple, yet looks very robust. They obviously did not want to comply and use the Ak, given the history of the vz.52 and vz.52/57.

Tear down however is just as easy, at least to me as an Ak, just release the two pins, one for the top cover and once for the gas tube. The rear of the top cover flips up and just slide the bolt and carrier back to release it from the receiver. Like the Ak, you cant put it together incorrectly, it just won't go. In the weight category, the Vz, even with the solid machined receiver is a pound lighter than an Ak. The Vz weighs in at just under 7 pounds. With the way the gas system/action was designed, in my experience, felt recoil between the two is less with the Vz as well.

Enjoy :toast:

I'll do Vz58 vs. Vz2008 coming up soon. :D

Nice GM. If yours is as good as mine I think you will be well pleased with it. Construction wise as well as shooting and reliability. Hey, did you ever find a VZ52? The bolts are similar.

These comparison pictures are the type of things that make mechanics smile! Very cool.

That's one of the reason's I love firearms so much Russell. The technical asspect of them. From one mechanic to another about a post made by a mechanic, lol.

Not owning any kind of AK based firearms I have to ask. What is with the wire cable in the receiver and is it in a wear position?

Gurn, did you get yours from PSA? I have read very good reviews from folks on Slick Guns (where I first saw that $399 deal posted). After some range time, most if not all seem to be happy with their purchase.

I cobbled my VZ2008 and gear together from different online retailers last year (gun with fixed stock, extra folding stock, six mags, mag pouch, sling, bayonet, and scabbard) for about $500 total, so the PSA deal is very attractive.

Greasemonkey, I'd be interested to hear if there is any major difference in function and accuracy between your 2008 and your 58.

Yeah, PSA. Took about two weeks to ship but it's safly at my ffl's shop right now waiting on me. When I saw it was delivered on the tracking I texted my ffl and asked him " How does my rifle look?" He replied " Like a box" :chuckles: He is a real joker.
