My first Mosin

Post by sheepdog »

I've been a member here for a while but never have owned or even shot a Mosin. That came to an end last Friday. I was at my local LGS just looking and the owner comes up and asks me if I want to look at a Swedish Mauser, my passion. Well it's a real dog and priced about $200 too high so I just hand it back. He then says well go look at the crates of Mosins he just got in. Any collector loves to look through crates of rifles. These had, Your Choice $179 on them. Well I know that's a tad high but what the hell, no shipping charge, I don't have a C&R so no FFL that's $50 together, just then, I guess because I'm a decent customer, he says, "Take $10 off." Lo and behold look what I found in the crate. It rode home with me.

A 1936Tula hex receiver rebuild. All numbers I can find match, even the bayo. The floorplate is a forcematch. Nice clean bore though I've been soaking it in Hoppes for 3 days now and I'm still pulling blue patches out. Its in the safe with 10 Mausers, hope hostilities don't break out in there. :beek:

Time to learn so I guess I'll be around here a little more often.

Nice first Mosin. 1936 is the last year of the Hex. Went to round after that.

A 1936 Tula hex with a great stock? An auspicious start, I'd say.

Cool, 1936 Tula was a change over year, can be either hex or round.

With the Spanish Civil war and the Russians sending arms to them, I wonder how many 1936 rifles actually stayed in Russia.

Hey that's not fair, most everyone else had a wartime 43 Izhevsk for a first mosin. :very mad:
Seriously though you did good, nice looking Tula. :vcool: :vcool:

Nice pick, one of the 1936's that didn't get shipped to Spain,

Welcome! Nice looking rifle. Mine is a '33 Tula hex with force matched magazine floor plate, both Tula & Izhevsk marks on bolt and Izhevsk marks on barrel bands. Your stock is nearly the same shade of medium brown as mine. The more I know about Mosins, the more I appreciate how well they were cared for in storage and refurbishment. A good Mosin, is like buying a modern rifle in 'like new' condition for 1/3 the price or less. Happy shooting! :)

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. Thanks guys, I do think I have bonded with it. Range report coming in a few days, really looking forward to it. I can see the K98k vs. Mosin return grudge match coming. Winner will get to take on my Finn marked M96. It might have taken a shot in anger at either one of the contenders back in WWII.

Nice! I was lucky enough to pick up a similar looking 1929 Tula for my first Mosin, but had to buy a bayonet separately.
