A pair of Sako's

Post by vtxmosin »

I've been very fortunate lately in this great country of ours. I landed 2 M39s within a week of each other. These are my first, haven't broke them down so tang dates aren't known. Here are a few pics.

Nice work. Be careful, they become addicting.

The tang dates only matter if you are trying to buy one without an FFL and want something 1898 and down. I would suggest leaving them be unless you have some pressing reason to take it down like you see active rust or something. These rifles were tweaked heavily by the Finns, shims that sort of thing, when you disturb the action you could alter the rifles shooting characteristics. Nice finds! :)
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Since Burns and company are the only sources of them and you know that they take them apart because they know when they have certain models why should he not take them apart? Taking them apart to check tang dates and safety to fire them is a mandatory step for me on any rifle. I do as you always suggest be careful of losing or moving shims but how can you be sure Burns did the same thing? Burns knows when they sell an antique so you know right there they take them apart. Most all sellers of M39's check for antiques these days as they do on most rifles that have hidden manufacture dates. You just have to pray whoever sold the rifle to you is as careful as you are and hope for the best. I have hit different tang dates impressed in the wood then is on the receiver more than once so you know right there the rifle has changed stocks. Bill :wink:

Oh yeah? Then why is that when I took mine apart for the first time, I found a 1898 Tula receiver, and a note that said THIS RIFLE HAS NEVER BEEN TAKEN APART?
These 2 Sako rifles go great together. 2 different finishes in the blueing, so you got it all covered. I like the left one best, but only because I am a sucker for a worn blue metal finish. My only M39 looks more like your 1943, nicer state of blueing.

You answered that question all by yourself, because that note makes it apparent they read what is being said here and feel the need to write a note to defend themselves. Bill ;mywink;

When I took mine apart I found a bunch of dirt. I wouldn't want to shoot it with all that dirt between the action and the wood wearing my blueing down. I want to shoot it but preserve it at the same time. I found so much dirt that I filled an 8oz Styrofoam cup.

I took the 43 apart and its mated to a 1915 Tula receiver. I checked every part and there's not one Izhevsk part on this rifle. Its all Tula and Sako.
