Winchester Model 1917
Winchester Model 1917
I have been searching for a representative and clean one of these for about 5 years now that I have all the rest of the WW2 rifles the US fielded in the war. I found one on a buddies table at a recent gun show I attended. Even though it was Friday night I told him not to put it out that I would take it. Winchester receiver and barrel with an 11/18 sate on it. Now here is the really nice thing the barrel was a little under a 1 on the muzzle erosion and the bore was enough to blind you. So my thought of getting a war time barrel with plenty of meat left was answered enough for me. I figure the war was actually over in 10/18 so this rifle more than likely never went overseas at all and that explained the lack of wear on a 106 year old barrel. The stock is kind of a mystery as the end is either stamped so light it can not be read or stamped at all. The stock itself is in much better condition than the upper guards are so I am guessing this is a replacement at some time. The only mark I can see at the rear of the trigger guard and is so small even with a magnifying glass it can not bead. It is not a P that is for sure and might be two smaller letters run together. The safety is the only Eddystone part that is showing. When I tore it down there are a lot of Eddystone parts inside including the bolt release. I kind of figured there would be because I was almost positive the rifle went to be rebuilt at some armory at sometime in its life for it looked far too good to have not been. I gave more than I wanted to for this one but it makes the US set complete other than a 1911 pistol maybe? With the prices on them these days I doubt I will ever have one. There was a Remington Rand at a recent show that was ticketed at $3400 and it sold! Comments or questions welcomed! Bill

It's a great rifle Bill. I'm glad that I got to see it. The bore is fantastic on that one.

Is my computer not working? I don't see any pictures.
Glad you were able to fill the empty spot in your collection. That must be a great feeling.
PS: I doubt ANYONE makes you pay more than what you want to pay. So enjoy.

That's a nice find Bill, but I don't think any US M1917's yet have a 106 year old barrel unless I died and came back 2023 like on that TV show Resurrection

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Winchester Model 1917
A lot of these M1917's got rebuilt during and just after WWI and during WWII. I have a Eddystone one (serial # 569483) that was completely reblued and all matching parts except for the Remington stamped trigger, stock and barrel. It was fitted with a like new 3-18 Remington barrel (March 1918) and a Remington stock with a large stamped OSAA inside of a box just below the bolt release and a large R inside a box under the wrist.
My buddy has another Eddystone that has a 1942 dated JA marked 2 groove barrel also like new.

Congrats on a nice Pattern 17 zeebill. It took me a few years to get my Winchester all Winchester but it was a fun project. Lucky mine only needed a few parts. Looking forward to the pics.
