Ruger American Rimfire

I've heard good reports about these little rifles. I am looking for a bolt action repeater in .22lr. I have a couple of Ruger 10/22's and an old single shot Revelation; that's it for .22lr chambered rifles in my house. I like the looks of the Ruger American and the fact that it uses 10/22 magazines (I have several). I've also gotten good reports about the trigger and it's practical accuracy for a sporting rifle. If anybody out there owns one, I would appreciate your impressions of the rifle.

There are a couple of threads. I got the mag. I had some trouble feeding. I only had one type of ammo. I read that I may have to tweak the mags a little. Good trigger and shoots well. Nice feel to it.

I finally picked one up at the local LGS. Traded a 30 year old Marlin .22 Mag and some .22 Mag Ammo for it. First impressions are good, but I don't believe the folks at Ruger test fired or sighted this one, as the rear dovetail needed drifting to the right because of a windage error. I don't like the fiber optic sight anyway, so I installed a 1980's vintage Bushnell Sportview (Korean) and it shot very well with that setup.

Plus features:
1. Trigger; very smooth, predictable and adjustable.
2. Bolt; well made, 60 degree throw, smooth operating, good feeding from the magazine; easy to extract for cleaning
3. Magazine; what can I say; the rotary 10 round identical to the 10/22 is the best
4. Scope mounting options are excellent. You can use the groved rail or Weaver #12 sight Bases.
5. Price; the rifle was only 269 bucks. With my trade, the paid difference was only 70 dollars; not a bad deal.

Minus features:
1. Iron sights; the Lyman folding rear sight is fine, but the front fiber optic is crap. Besides, Ruger obviously didn't laser sight, bore sight or test fire the rifle with iron sights and it required windage and elevation adjust the irons to point of aim. I never had to do that with any 10/22.
2. Stock; it's a piece of plastic and I just would prefer wood. Nevertheless, it comes with two different buttstock inserts for scope or iron sight use and has a good bedding system. I guess it is the 21st century trend.

I'm hoping like hell Wallyworld will carry these in stores after the next modular set. Of course then I get a discount too! :devil2:

Here are the results I got after sighting in with Eley Club .22lr at 50 yards, 10 shots. My scope has some parallax at that range. I believe I can do better with a 50 yard parallax adjusted scope specifically built for .22 rimfire. This rifle is one of the best shooting .22 rifles out of the box that I have ever owned.

I love mine. It's a tack driver at 50 yards using a Nikon 3-9x40.
