Cabela's Mosins and ammo

Post by scap »

Stopped at one of the Denver Cabela's tonight. Nothing great on Mosins but about a dozen on the rack. Mainly 1941-43 Izhevsk with one 1936 round receiver Izhevsk with a DDR mark. (Triangle with a 1 correct?). The markings were all very faint and the overall shape was not great, it actually looked like it had a rusty receiver.
What struck me though was the amount of Herters 7.62x54r on the shelves. They had it in four different locations, 20 rounds for $11.99. Too expensive for me, I shoot surplus but in a bind that might work. There must have been a couple of hundred cases on the shelves.
They also had some other "blue" box 7.62x54r stuff for almost 20 bucks for 20.

Just thought I mention it in case someone is interested. The Mosins were for sale for $169.00 each.

I bought some of the Herters when I got my first rifle on one of their $129 sales. How can you buy a rifle and have nothing to put through it? It cycles fine and shoots accurately. They had a end wall of it on sale for $9.99. They also have PPU in 150 and 182 grain and Nagant revolver ammo.

The very first milsurp I bought was a 1869/71 Swiss Vetterli, there was no ammunition available for it ( .41 Swiss rimfire) and 35 years later there still isn't any ammo. It's OK to buy a piece of history and never shoot it, some collectors would have a coronary at the idea of shooting a rifle in their collections ( tightly sealed under glass and handled with white gloves only) Very likely that commercial ammo is reloadable, you would have to check the box to see for sure ( if it's steel case it's not reloadable) if you needed brass for reloading then the more expensive ammo would be the way to go.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

The Herters is steel case and the PPU which is the blue box stuff is brass.

There are some guns in a collection that I could understand not firing ever, like a working maxum or the only remaining .45 Luger or if you have a borchardt pistol. I think it is pointless otherwise

A friend just grabbed some Herters steel free soft points in brass so we can shoot indoors.
At $17/20 it hurts but at least we can shoot indoors.
Plus he wants to get a die set for the x54r.
