Noob here. Got interested in Mosin Nagants about three month ago and found this forum a great place to learn more about these wonderful rifles.
My wife picked up on this and bought me one for Christmas. Awesome wife!!!!
Apparently they were on sale for Black Friday at Big 5 for $145. When she got there only one was left and this is what she got without even looking at it in any detail in the store. Being the last one they had she just took it.
Let's see if I paid attention over the past few month and all the great posts on this forum:
1929 Izhevsk
Matching numbers, no cross outs, except for the bayonet.
Tula bolt
1929 tang date
The dovetail on the barrel is shorter than the length of the base of the rear sight leaving a gap at the end toward the shooter. I am thinking this would make it an ex-dragoon?
Everything was covered in thick grease including the stock. The stock has a couple of repair sections and a pretty sloppy shellac job if that is what is on it.
The plan is to get the grease cleaned of, re-oil the metal parts (mostly done) check head spec and go shoot it. In accordance with the rules of this forum I have no intention to do any kind of restoration or modification to her besides get the grease off to make her less slippery.
I did notice while just wiping off the grease with a soft cloth that some of the black painted areas on the rear sight and the front of the barrel were chipping off. No bare metal exposed and the remaining paint seems to have good adhesion. Is that common?
Any of your input would be greatly appreciated but I think she (wife) did great.
