1943 Izhevsk ex-sniper... #2

Nothing special, but it's another one added to the collection, so I need to share. I bought it a few weeks back, but I didn't have time for pictures so I didn't mention it yet.
I guess technically it was a birthday present to myself, as my birthday was on the 1st, and that was about when I bought it.
It's yet another 1943 Izhevsk M91/30 for my collection. I think I have 9 1943 M91/30's now. I couldn't let this one go as it was an ex-sniper and I have a soft spot for them. Only interesting things on this one is that there are a few shims in the stock for the action. The forearm of the stock has a 4 digit number written in the barrel channel, but it doesn't match anything. The bore is shiny, rifling looks OK, no counter bore.
I will get a chance to shoot it on Sunday and I'll update then with some accuracy reports.

Nice addition. My latest acquisition still needs posted. I picked up a 43' Izhevsk red letter last month. It is my first 43' 91/30 however. Are you collecting 43s specifically or you just happened to find 9 that you couldn't resist?

Well originally it wasn't intentional until without trying I had 5 of them. After that I decided that if I was looking at a pile of refurbs and a couple had nice stampings to choose from, I would pick the one dated 1943 over the others to keep the line up going. I am missing a DDR marked 1943, and I kick myself for passing on one while I was in Texas.

Yeah I forgot to mention that it's in a wartime stock. Kinda hard to see since the lighting was bad.

How do you know an ex sniper when you see it?

As shown above. If there are plugs in the receiver it is an indication that there was a scope mounted at one time. As above, also, if there is a lined out number on the side of the barrel (in Russian rifles), that is a lined out scope number in Izhevsk snipers. With Tula ex snipers you will see the plugs and the letters C and П directly above the Tula star. All these things can be readily spotted when looking at any rifle. Check for the stampings then verify by looking in the receiver. You can also see hastily ground repairs on the outside of the receiver sometimes from when they filled the mounting holes.

My rifle is in the car ready for a trip to the desert but I don't think it has these indicators.

Yes, I would be surprised if your MO Hex would be a sniper. The majority fall in the '43-'44 range. Every once in a while you see a Hex sniper up for sale but I'm not sure if they are real or not. I suppose there were some - sniper rifles just didn't automatically appear in WWII or with the round receivers after 1936. But, if they had all the indicators, they would probably be real. I'm not the total expert on snipers though but

OK Finally getting a chance to post up a report from the range on Sunday. I still had my table, seat, and rest set up at 50 yards from when I had the ladies out last weekend, so I just stuck with that for this shoot.
I figured the rifle would shoot high and I didn't bring the bayonet, so I knew it would shoot to the right a bit. So my first volley of 5 rounds were aimed at the center of the target, but at the bottom edge of the paper. Next I moved the sights to dead nuts center once I saw that it wasn't shooting very high at all. I am pleased with the groupings even though it's only from 50 yards. I had (4) 5 shot groups, aimed at 2 locations to yield the results below. Notice how I was able to get a better grouping when aiming at a definitive point (ie the center cross) as compared to just aiming for the center line and the bottom edge of the paper.
Also, the trigger wasn't half bad. A nice pull with good take up, but a little heavy.

Nice group. I find that I am better with open sights if I use a plain white target with a single orange stick on 3 inch dot. Works for me with buckhorn, U or ghost rings.

No sir. It IS a PW Arms import, but no Molot markings. I've yet to see a Molot at Gander Mountain, but I did see an occasional Molot at some of the Cabela's I stopped at during my East Coast "bootleg".
