Mossberg 200K

Post by MN Fan »

I saw this old gem on the used gun rack at Cabela's about 3 weeks ago and was tempted to take it home. But I talked myself out of it. Then a week later, I was looking at it again, but still left it behind. Third week came around and it was still talking to me! The good news is they dropped the price $20 in the meantime :)

Its a 1955 Mossberg 200K pump action, 2 shell magazine, 12 ga. shotgun. It has a factory C-Lect-Choke. I had never seen one like it before which seems to be the ones speaking to me lately! It is in fantastic shape and I am anxious to get some Hoppes and gun oil on it and I believe she is going to polish up like new. The blueing is in excellent condition and the slide/pump is effortless. This will be more of a collector piece than a hunter or trap shooter, but I had to have it!

(I also picked up a new camera tonight and though the quality is really good, the photographer himself is not all that good. Its late and I am tired of playing with the various macros, etc. These are as good as its going to get for tonight!

(for some reason, the close up on the barrel appears to have a rust haze in the photo. In person, there is zero rust color. I just can't figure out the camera yet lol)

That is pretty neat. I have never seen one of those. I thought it was one of those bolt shotguns at first. Interesting.

Thanks guys. Now that I have it at home, I really like it. I did some quick searching and it doesn't look like there are that many around. There have been a few of them on GB auctions and they don't go for a whole lot, but that's cool. I will shoot it next week, clean it up and put it back on the rack. Its will be an interesting conversation piece anyway :)

This will be interesting :)

A friend at work bought a new Benelli. He mentioned he wanted to try it out at a trap range and I told him that though I haven't shot for awhile, I used to do pretty good. And then I mentioned the ol' Mossberg. Well, the conversation then turned into a challenge lol.

In a couple of hours, I am putting this old girl up against a modern Benelli. 25 clays, loser buys lunch. He texted me a few minutes ago to make sure we're still on. I replied...I am bringing 25 shells, you make sure you bring $25 cash

That was a pretty safe bet Brad

Well it looks like I am running with the wrong crowd. I need to spend a lot more money before I will be welcome there.

It started out pretty cool. All the groupies hanging out inside the club house came over to check out the old shotgun. It got handed around as everyone looked it over and commented on it. The Range Master commented that even with all the clubs and forums he belongs to, he has never seen one.

I was straight up with him and told him I have not fired it yet. He decided that he couldn't allow it due to its age and since I hadn't shot it before. We had a nice discussion, but that was about it. I started home and then remembered the indoor range was close by. I really had the urge to shoot it so I pulled in a let her breathe once again. The 00 Buck was a bit more than I wanted to put through it for the first time, but she handled it well.

Our "challenge" is still on and I do intend to take it back to the trap range now that its been shot. Looks like I am grilling hamburgers today...

How old is it Cliff? It looks like it is ok to me. I would be skeptical of some new ones more then that one. Of course i have never been to an upscale range where the club house is full of groupies. Last one i went to was in Las Vegas and i was up against my brother who had a nice itallian made gun and he let me borrow his kids shorty and i equaled him. He was mad at me for that as he shoots alot. Now the next time i will put my money on the Moss cause you have determination now.

Yep, she will be busting clays next trip :)

I understand his decision, but the old girl looks great for her age and the range wasn't busy at all. He did OK with his explanation for turning it down until he made the comment that "this is a trap range, not a shooting range". Then he went on to explain how he doesn't allow tactical and assault guns on site. I looked at the gun, then back at him. I was thinking...how did we go from old to tactical?

Oh well, just one more reason to sell this place and get back out into the country!

She's 57 years old :)

Hmmm....Cliff sounds like the range master did not want to see and old classic Mossberg out shoot a Benelli, unsafe to shoot? New firearms fail out the box also. At least I know what not to say at any upscale ranges, not that I'm visiting any soon. Forgot to add beautiful shotgun, your finds have me wanting to have something new to me but old and classic placed in the cabinet. :bravo:

Well in that case i am approaching ban too from being too old. Too many rules. I thought that if you were busting clays that you were at a rang that you shot at? Not sure of the difference except i do get that it is a shotgun range. I guess you have to have an itallian made shotgun or one that cost $2000 or it is considered tactical to him.

Too bad they wouldn't let you use it. Those sporting clay/skeet guys are a finicky bunch. I showed up at a skeet range with my FIL's SXS 12 Ga. Merkel and got some strange looks, but I did OK for a newbie.

I inherited one and am having a good look at it right now.
I don't think it has been fired in 40 years and not cleaned for maybe half that.
After scrubbing off the surface rust, I find I am down to bare steel for most of the barrel.
Otherwise I think it is in good shape and looks a lot like the one pictured above.
I think I can mostly restore it but am not sure it is worth the investment as I don't have any use for it.
Anybody want to weigh in on buying it as is?
