For the purpose of determining powder charge do I reference a plated bullet (230 grain Barry's plated round nose) the same as a FMJ of the same weight?

Berry standard plated bullets are rated to 1250 fps. so there shouldn't be a problem using FMJ data.

Berry's FAQ's
Velocities depend on the caliber, but as a rule of thumb, we recommend you don't shoot our plated bullets over 1250 feet-per-second. Our 44's actually shoot best around 1150 fps. 45's are generally good at 850-900 fps. Our bullets are not recommended for magnum velocities over 1250fps unless the bullet description denotes a thick plated bullet with a higher listed maximum for velocity.

Just bought one box each of 9mm, .40 and .45 at Cabelas to get us started. At $40 or so per 250 they were no bargain. We'll be ordering cast lead bullets by the thousand for range ammo.

Xtreme has (or had) a 15% off sale going on last week on their plated bullets. I bought some of their 230Gr RN for my 1911, got a few hundred already loaded over 4.7Gr of bullseye

I believe Berry's suggests a mid point of lead and Fmj as a good point to start at.

I didn't drag my books out, but I use Berry's 230gr RN over 4.5 gr of Titegroup @ 1.250. I will look at the books tomorrow to see where that falls and check my notes for chrono #'s
