Looks like Classic sold out of crates

I was cruising on Classic's site, seeing if they had anything new that I couldn't live without, and noticed that they apparently sold out of the crates for $2500 last Friday, Aug. 9.
They say crates that they get in the future will be $25 more per gun or $3000 total.

And I just got into these guns less than 2 years ago, and crates were $1500 then. Not to mention the $55 guns I have heard about from before that.

I always have non-buyer's remorse.
Anybody else?

But, I guess in another couple of years, we will be saying "I remember when they were only $150 each, or $3000 a crate."
I'm not sure about that though. I wonder if they haven't come pretty close to topping out.

I saw that too. If you buy a crate, it is not worth it. You can buy them cheaper individually and have them shipped for cheaper. You can get laminated 91-30's for $155+ shipping. Sounds like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

2007 was the last time I bought a $55 Mosin 91/30 refurb.

Makes me wonder if it would be a smart idea to buy up these refurbs now. If this trend continues a common 91/30 refurb will be at $300 in 5 more years. Then again perhaps I just want more reasons to keep buying... :D

Prices will continue to rise over time. You want a rifle, buy it now. And regarding the crates from Classic, don't waste your money & I'm glad as hell to hear they no longer sell them. :devil2:

Aww! the used car salesmen of Mosins ran out of cars. Dam shame I am still looking for firewood for winter too!

I last got 91/30's wholesale in 2010 for $59 a piece. Will ask Joe what he can get them for next week just for kicks. I suspect it will be higher because the distributers selling to dealers are where the prices went up in this country. They are crying that the importers are also taking a bigger cut. With Obamacare ready to kick in many smaller employers are cutting hours people work and emloyees overall. So overall it will cost much more to run a small business and will close many doors. Dang shame idiots in power don't see that? Bill

Is Classic frowned on by Mosin buyers and collectors?

I didn't know they were considered the "used car salesman" of Mosins. I have bought from them before and basically got what I expected.

Well, except once when their FFL lookup system was screwy and wouldn't let me place an order one night. I had it in my cart and was all the way to checkout. I called the next day and they said the system had a glitch and told me what to do. Then, I went to order the next night and the price had gone up!! :very mad: I explained that it was their mistake and I had tried to buy it the night before, but I wasn't successful in getting them to sell it for yesterday's price.

But other than that, nothing major. Nothing like advertising something in excellent condition, and then when I get its a rust ball, or anything. And nothing like taking weeks and half a dozen calls trying to get an account set up, like somebody  ahem.... ahem... Century... ahem..

Which dealers are considered better?

Classic Arms... The place that likes to Hard Chrome rifles & pistols? I personally do not care for the place. But more to the point; Why buy a whole Crate of Rifles???? To order sight unseen 20 91/30 rifles that were already picked over leaving mostly Wartime Izhevsk with a few earlier pieces just to keep a bit of variety is a total waste of money in my opinion. Go buy an empty crate, buy 20 individual rifles of your choice & fill it up.

Remember... Every Single Distributor out there cherry picks all the good rifle out of every crate. No exceptions... Period. Realize they have to pull them ALL out in the first place to slap a serial number & famed import stamp banner on each & every receiver. No way do they let the good ones go with the rest. And for every crate you have the opportunity to glance through examine the consistency of consecutive serial Numbers. If that crate WAS left alone, All 20 rifles will follow a consecutive serial number to the next... Or at the very least be extremely damn close. They empty a slew of crates, line up the rifles, stamp them, give them at least a cursory examination, pull the best ones & repack the run of the mills back into crates.

As to which dealer is better? Try them all! Start with our Advertisers first. They are all great to deal with, won't screw you & you can put some variety into your collection. Then try other places, LGS's. Gunshows, traders & such. Check the Trader here on the forum! I've seen a few nice rifles sell there over the past few months.

Hope this helps & good luck.

Ron

I got a Classic crate. 20 sequential serial #s, both rifles and bayonets. 3 ex dragoons (one imperial marked) 12 hexes. Only 7 wartime rifles. Does that sound cherrypicked?

I had such a bad customer service experience with Classic Firearms once via email, I'm still shocked to this day. I almost had to wonder if I was either dreaming, or a 12 year old kid hacked their PC and was answering emails. lol

I've also read on various gun boards that people's 1-star or 2-star reviews often magically didnt appear, so I think there is some "shadiness" going on in their ability to not post those to the website. Looking through their feedback for various guns would seem to confirm that, almost all 4 and 5 star reviews, occasionally maybe a few 2 stars, and...... I cant recall EVER seeing a 1-star review on their site, lulz. SHADY! :chuckles:

Add me in with the very small minority of people who believe Mosin prices WILL go down again.

I used to work in a field where predicting the future was critical. If there was one thing I learned, it's that most human beings are virtually incapable of accepting or believing a different reality than what exists at the current moment. If XYZ is hot now, they typically wont foresee a scenario where that isnt so (or vice-versa). IMO, this is the perfect "Mosin" storm right now, where all sorts of people who've never even fired a gun before, much less owned one, are buying guns, and many of them are just acquiring the cheapest rifles and handguns they can put a paw on, and that = Mosin-Nagant.

That would be interesting info.

12 hexes out of 20?

I'm not going to do the math on that, but statistically speaking that's pretty amazing. The odds on that would have to be pretty staggering I would think. Buy a lottery ticket next!

I don't work for Classic and don't get a free gun for saying it, but they've done right by me. I've spent nearly $4000 with them since last November (Not just Mosins) and there have been a few kinks WHICH THEY TOOK CARE OF PROMPTLY. I don't think they cherrypick their crates and their customer service, FOR ME, has been superb.

Let others hate......More for me!

I'll admit; An exception to the rule. But I could find all those rifles by browsing around & buying individuals here & there. I'll be damned if I'll waste $3,000 on a shot in the dark. :no2:

It seems like a lot of their last crates had a high percentage of better rifles.

On one thread, it seems like a week or so back, someone posted pics of his crate and had several Tulas, hex receivers, plus some other interesting ones. With my luck, i'd probably get all Izhevsk rounds, from the same year.

Of course, I'm still not sure that would be a bad thing. $150 each is about as little as they seem to be going for. They should be worth at least what you paid, maybe just not a lot more unless they were something special. I got a shipping price from them a while back of $200. For $10 a rifle it would be hard to beat that too.
And I, personally, don't really see them going down in value. I feel like they may have taken their big jump, and may level off from here(at least for a while), but I don't think they'll drop.
Heck, if they get more in, I might still have to waste $3000 on something totally stupid. Oh, I mean, as I'd say to the old lady "Make a wise investment in something totally necessary."

My crate was in sequence also, although there was only 4 hex's.
After Jan 1st out here in California No more face to face all purchases must go through FFL That's going to add to to cost especially if you buy 10 or 20 rifles 1or 2 at a time.

I thought about buying a crate several times, so I did. A nice empty one that I then filled with my own personally cherry picked rifles, refurbs, Finn's, ex snipers, MO's, DDR's SCW's , ex dragoons, real dragoons, issued rifles, revolution year rifles.
