Great looking Vetterli, I have a small collection of these myself, but as yet they are still original rimfire. I do have a spare bolt for the conversion but no time to do it just now.

First I have heard of German soldiers being issued Swiss rifles during the war. I am surprised there were any left for them to buy after the Swiss government sold so many to Bannerman & Son here in the states around 1900.

It's not shortened, the soldier holding it is on the short side, the rifles could be a photographers prop guns as this is obviously a posed photo in a studio of some sort. The soldiers would not be carrying their weapons without their helmets, cartridge pouches and bayonets.

Ya I didn't think it was shorter. I was wondering if they put some smokeless barrels on these like they did the gras m74/80/14 and the 80/87/15 vetterlis and some of the other smokeless conversions? :D

i wonder if it's not a M1870 Italian Vetterli, too bad we cant see the bottom of the receiver to tell. And don't know if Italy and Switzerland used different cleaning rods, but the end on my Swiss Vetterli rod is different than that one. I've thought about getting a spare bolt to do the change over to center fire, but I have so many others to play with. I may just leave it alone.

My milsurp collection started with the Swiss 69/71 Swiss Vetterli, I have five original rifles and three Bubba ones at last count.

The rifle is positively Swiss, the Italian rifles used some elements of the Vetterli design, but differed in outward appearance and receiver design. No tube magazine and elevator system for one thing.
