I found a CVA hawkins 50 cal muzzleloader at a local pawn shop but not sure if its a good deal or not. The rifle looks to be in very nice condition barrel looks clean no rust inside. Some discoloring around the nipple maybe some old rust that got cleaned up. The wood looks like its new so this hasn't been a beat around gun guessing sitting in a closet.

I will be using it at the range as I am not a hunter (could be if I had more free time) but something cool for the kids to learn on and hang on the wall before prices get stupid on BP also.

They are asking $159 and I'm thinking $125 sounds good.

He wouldn't move on the price and my gut said to walk away. So I will check back in a week or so.

Something about the sights didnt look right to me. Can't put my finger on it.

I had one of these in the 1980's, bought it at Service Merchandice, paid at least $150 for it. This is your basic caplock muzzleloader in the Hawken style, there was also a pistol offered. Good quality made in Spain.

How close of a true hawken is it?

Hard to say as each Hawken was unique, built to the customers specification. It's in the Hawken style as many rifles were , and still are made. The CVA's of the 1970's and 80's were good quality shooters, your basic entry level BP rifle that started many people off in the hobby.

Doe's it have two takedown pins? I have one of these older CVA's and it has a slow twist (ball twist) barrel. It is Spanish made I think and it is a tack driver! I have seen some of the Springfield Hawkens,,,had two of them and they were the faster twist guns. Did not like them at all for Ball shooting,,,,,,,Note what type of projectile you intend to shoot? The old slow twist gun is better for balls.
