Post by milmike »

I have two 1927 tula's and the rear sight on them are not in the same location dose any one know why? the one on the left is N20639 and the right is N87812 So that makes about 67173 units between them.

Hey, I've got 2 duplicates of that year, but other than the little ? Around the Tula and it was a "Hex" star I didn't assign any importance to it.

They're updated or ex-dragoons. The original sights were replaced with M91/30 sights when they updated the rifles to M91/30s or during the refurb process at some point. It's normal.

Interesting that the one on the left has a clearance relief ground on the contour of the barrel where the old Konovalov sight would otherwise have touched. The one on the right does not, but with the sight further forward it would have cleared. There were trials rifles in these years, but who knows the details of if and when you could tell the difference.

I wouldn't worry about it. As someone indicated these rifles had new sights put on them. Interesting that these look like different sights. Perhaps they mounted the new sights in the general location of where the previous sight was located. One shank clearance the other not. Not may have something to do with it. We can speculate as to why the Russians did what they did but we will never really know. In Detroit some auto workers go out and drink beer and have a doobie at lunch. Wonder what the Russians did...

Anyway, not to worry. If you are still concerned about this please pack the rifles up and send them to me for further inspection. :D

This is normal, the technical term for this is f*** up, not a critical one so it was ignored, some FNG, or drunk line worker just set the rear sight mount a little too far back on the barrel and because of that the original rear sight leaf was hitting the barrel when it was down. That is why they had to grind a bit off the barrel there in front of the markings, to allow the original sight the clear. It will not effect function.

My thought was that the earlier of the two was a dragon and maybe the later was built as I
t is with that being its original and only sight. But like I say just a thought. Did they not build both at Tula that year?

In 1927 the dragoon rifle was all they were building at Izhevsk or Tula. The first 91'30 's didn't come along until 1930, and even then few were made until 1933 or so as older parts in the system continued to be used up.

Nice, I would have bought them both for close comparison at the range and home. Maybe the closer sight shoots better cause the sight is that much closer.  :vcool: :vcool: :vcool:
