Calling all fisherman!

I still consider myself a very new beginner. I have a rod and real I got for my birthday last year but I would like to get another. Maybe a little bigger one for heavier stuff. I was wondering if yall who fish more frequently have any recomendations for a good inexpensive rod and reel to use? Something that isn't super exspensive but I am prepared to pay more than the base combos from the sporting goods stores. It doesn't have to be a combo. I have no issues with pairing separate rod and reels. I have no boat so everything I do or will do would be from the shore. Not sure of that makes a difference. So far I have only fished local pay lakes using live bait. Catfish is all I've caught and I guess is a prominent fish.

My wife and I hope to go this coming weekend. This should be interesting haha. I being very new and my wife who is completely new to it . My current rod is a cheap shakespear ugly stick and spinning reel combo. I believe it is a medium rod. For something cheap to see if my wife will like it all we got her a zebco 33 combo kit. It is pretty cheap but I didn't want to invest a ton.

I find fishing gear in the cars and give it to my neighbor who fishes, could be some expensive stuff, I wouldn't now, but he sure seems happy to get it

Last month I gave him a big plastic box full of fake bugs and worms, he liked them.

I'm still new enough that I don't really know what to look for. All I've ever fished was with worm and bobber. I don't know, maybe thats all I need haha. Just hoping to get advice for better fisherman.

You really can not go wrong with an Ugly Stick. For the money its a very durable rod should something big come along. As for reals I have been using a couple of Shimano reels now for over twenty years and they have held up well from blue gill to large pike and muskie. I absolutely can not reccomend Shakespear. Wyatt has had three develope binding problems (that I could not fix) in the last two years. They are however very low end Shakespears. A 1950's to early 70's Mitchell (Garcia Mitchell after 1957) model 300 would be a good find if you locate one in an antique store or garage sale. Parts to repair them are still available and they are the standard our fathers and grandfathers judged reels by. Any older Mitchell for that matter if in working order is a good reel, they do happen to be collectable as well. There is a ton of fishing rods and reels out there, so whatever you do decide on, google it for reviews before you buy, see what folks are saying about using the product and you should not go wrong. Good luck and let us know what you decide! :)

Semper Fi, Rob

Thanks for info Rob! I think before I jump into another complete rod and reel. I may just replace the cheap reel on my ugly stick. It has caught a couple catfish but I can feel the cheapness. Not sure how long it will last.

I've been looking at descent price reel that would be better quality and durability. I'm thinking about getting one of these to put on it. It seems to have good reviews and the price is descent. Although it is the same price as the whole combo I first got haha.

There are so many different things to choose from. And while I would like something nice and durrable. I would still like it to be affordable. Do you have any recommendations for what line to use? I was just using the line that came on the cheap reel. I'm not sure that I trust it. I would like to change it before I head out this weekend.

I fish salt water only, but I'm a big fan of Okuma. It's in the sweet spot for me balancing low cost and high quality.

Hey pony, I've got the same set up as you. Just upgrade the reel and you will do fine. nothing wrong with an ugly stick....see

I like the dynamite in the water way, but NYS won't let me play with explosives.

Thanks guys! I'm still learning most stuff. I've probably only been a handful of times in my life lol.

What I think I'm beginning to realize outs that when using a bobber or bottom fishing my rod will be perfectly fine. But when you do casting for bass or something you needed something more sensitive to feel more of what's going on. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still learning all this stuff. If that is the case, then what I have should be fine for me right now. Just need to upgrade the reel and line and I should be good for the most part.

Now I guess I need to fish more to get better at catching them, getting them unhooked, cleaned up, and eaten :D

I cast and use spinners with that ugly stick. Its so thin you can feel em bite. That's how Liam got that fish in the video. Cast and reel in slowly. I used a lead off the bobber so it hung down but didn't drag the bottom.worked great. They longer shiny things. Also once you catch one, clean it and use the spleen and other parts as bait
