Arisaka?

Post by Wolf308 »

I have a costumer who has been talking about picking up an Arisaka. Does anyone know a good, reliable place I can send him to look? I just want to make sure the gentleman doesn't get screwed over by someone. Thanks!

Theres a gunshow in Fayetteville, NC this weekend. Everytime I go, all the way to the left and the front, there is a guy selling a rifles. He has an Arisaka on a round gun rack. It's nothing special, but its a T99. He's asking I think $189 for it. This rifle has been there so long, I swear I am going to buy it one day, just so I don't have to see it. :D :D
It's not a bad rifle tho. There will be another guy there that sometimes has them, but they will be $350+ Now the smart $$ will drive north to Richmond, VA this weekend. I think, actually I have never been. I was planning on going till I blew my $$$ I didn't have already.
Good Luck.

For a good Arisaka check the local classifieds on a regular basis, most are bring back guns and when family members get hold of them after grandpa passes often no one realizes the significance of the rifle and they are under appreciated as a good rifle and sold for grocery money, often they can be picked up pretty reasonable. Under appreciated for the history many were cut and sporterized. The auction sights run them, sometimes a person can do okay there also.
These rifles also find there way into the dark corners of many gun shops, once again under appreciated, people will trade them towards something modern, so look in the back of the racks and then throw out an offer, especially on last ditch substitute standard rifles, no takers so shops sometimes let these go reasonable considering what they represent. There won't be any commercial importers with these rifles a few came in from China in the early 90's otherwise the supply results from vets who returned to the states with an example after the war.

I've gotten a few like that. Both of my Enfields were picked up by my boss at auctions for under $100. I did suggest some auction houses for him, but I did that when he was looking for the Enfield, too.

I am new to military surplus weapons...I have a collection total of 1 so far lol. But, I can tell already I am hooked. I was at a local auction here in Omaha last week and among the antiques, there were about 15 long guns and 15 hand guns. One was an Arisaka in pretty good shape. I didn't know anything about it. I bid up to $135 and dropped out. It sold for $180. This one did have the "mum" ground off, but I don't know anything more about it. Looking at Gun Trader, it seems I could have bid just a bit higher and been OK, but it looks like it sold at a fair price.

He could take a look at Liberty Tree Collectors, they have several listed:

https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/p ... Category=2

The Arisaka is a great looking rifle with history behind it. Have him do some reading into the differences between the type 99 and the type 38 before he decides. An in tact mum stamp is desireable and they can still be found. I have read that, with the bayonet attached, the Arisaka was the longest rifle fielded in WWII.

Yes, actually I did notice the FN49 it is in my top 15 list of rifles to acquire, I have wanted one since I was a kid, though the price keeps climbing so it may never happen. The FN49 I want the most is a one with a sharp Venezuelan crest in 7mm Mauser though I guess any one would do.

For him to identify any Arisaka and know something about one, here are two of the best reference and identification sources I believe exist.

http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html

http://riceone1.com/index.html

These are some thing to use to determine what you are looking at. NOT, all Arisaka Rifles were meant to actually be fired. Be cautious of what he buys.
Read, look at all the pictured examples and enjoy!

Just got a call from a buddy of mine in Fla who has an Arisaka his dad bought in brooklyn between 1955 and 1960. There are no import marks on it and the serial number is 2363. It has the emperor mark on it but I have not been able to get a good look at it to tell if there are any other marks on it. If there are any other marks where would I find them and where is the date stamped on it?
Thanks
Andy

Check here. This is all I could find at the moment. There is an Arisaka "Data Sheet" floating around the web. Probably on gunboards. Anyway, it takes it down to the many different parts. goodluck
