My first can of "1950s" vintage Bulgarian feed real smooth, with massive fireballs.
Later 1980s vintage sticks and has visibly different profile on primer end, and I get METAL SHAVING rings(hopefully from cartridge, not the gun), and no fireballs.
Any OLD ammo for sale online or elsewhere?
Ads seem to think 'not quite so old is better'. Not for my guns.
anyone selling OLD Mosin ammo, like pre-1970?

I haven't seen any of the 50's 54r ammo in several years,it pretty much disappeared after I bought my last couple 300 rd. tins of Bulgarian LB & HB ammo. I still have about 500 rds. of the brass cased Bulgarian stashed back in ammo can's the stuff looks like it was just made.
I just looked on http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=7.62x54R and all I see is 70's & 80's production ammo.

Re: anyone selling OLD Mosin ammo, like pre-1970?
The 1970's Russian stuff is the exception, not the rule, most all surplus 7.62x54r is stuff from the 50's and 60's. Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, all of this stuff was 50's and 60's dated. The Yugo brass case was dated later, but this is top grade ammo if you can find it. Most surplus ammo is steel case, Albanian, and Yugo along with some of the Bulgarian being the exception. If you shoot the steel case ammo you must clean your rifles chamber. Get a 20 gauge shotgun bore brush and a section of shotgun cleaning rod, screw the brush into the rod, chuck the rod in a drill, wrap the brush with oooo size steel wool and soak it with solvent, or JB bore paste. Drill the brush into the chamber but not into the rifling, work it for a minute or two, then clean the rifle and shoot it. If the problem persists, or comes back clean it again. It's a micro layer of dry cosmoline in there causing the problem, it sticks with the coatings on the steel case ammo. The metal shaving thing is normal for this ammo, the cartridge case is softer than the extractor's steel so it gets shaved a bit.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

1970=old? 1900 is old, 1970 is yesterday
