Who messed about with shims. I found these in my travels and decided they were worth sharing. If someone has the source let me know, I wouldn't mind snagging a copy of this. All I know is that it supposedly comes from some pre war soldier's manual.

The Russians and anybody else who used the Mosin knew how to tweak it for accuracy, but with the sheer size of the Russian, and later Soviet army's this was not possible to do on a large scale.

Based on the notes, russians were using paper shims and oiled wraps on the barrel. Finns had copper foil shims, which is better - won't sag from long term use or if the rifle gets wet.

I wonder how well an oil soaked piece of paper would hold up under the barrels heat. We have one kid who shot his rifle so hot he burned the stock.

Maybe the oil helped keep the barrel cool

.
I'm going to tinker with this one day. Its reversible and improves the accuracy. I wont be using oiled paper though. I think I'm going to use rubber tape. Its an electrical product. Just a roll of rubber that has no adhesive at all. Just sticks to itself from friction. And because its rubber it will have some give in it to dampen things and won't absorb any moisture.

Card stock should work, or lead flashing.

Lead under the receiver, not the barrel or things could get messy.

I used to have a bunch of sheets made from extra hard lead that had adhesive on one side, made for shielding X ray machines, I might still have some I didn't melt down, good for this maybe.

Also hobby lobby sells small sheets brass in various thicknesses

. I've already got the brass and one of my rifles shimmed. Just never have got around to the testing phase

I wish I could read russian. Of course the schematic says it all I suppose. What purpose do the shims serve? It looks like it would just make the reciever sit higher in the stock.

I tried the captions thru InterTran, got gibberish:
Compression among промасленной bumf ( nicely board ) behalf removal adjoin barrel near левью either near ствольной onlay
is what the first one came out as, and,
Caul among промасленной fabric ( either фетра наматываемой against barrel
The second one.
Go figure.

I'm no barrel harmonics expert, but I've read that oil dampened 35/65 polyester wool felt wrapped where the pic shows can improve accuracy. I haven't tried it personally. Good luck and don't blame me if you catch your stock on fire. He really caught his stock on fire??? Wow!
PS... JoAnn fabrics has the material.

Fig 17 : Shims made out of oiled paper ( or thin cardboard) to prevent the barrel from touching the forestock or handguard.
Upper left : shims placed to prevent the barrel from touching the handguard
Upper right: shims placed to prevent the barrel from touching the forestock
Upper middle: Shims placed to prevent the receiver from bending ( if a thick shim is used under the chamber area)
That's it
