I am thinking about sending one of my Black powder pistols to my Uncle in California. Is it Legal to just mail it being it is Black powder?

Re: Mailing a black powder pistol is it legal.
California could be a problem. Check the California laws before trying.

No, you cannot mail a handgun of any type. You can use UPS or Fedex. But, as tjtM38 said, you do also need to check the laws in California.

Thanks guys. I will check there laws.

Mike, ATF does not consider black powder guns to be 'firearms" as they don't fire fixed ammunition and can be mailed through USPS as long as there are no state or local regulations against it. The "no handgun through USPS" only applies to modern ones that fire cartridge ammo. Last time I checked California was ok except for certain counties.
Have your Uncle talk to an FFL in the county/city where he lives, preferable in one of the larger sporting goods stores that carry BP firearms.

Yep, you're correct, and I run a print department and mail room for a living! I guess it's fortunate I've never been asked to mail a black powder pistol! I have shipped a few handguns though.mogunner wrote:Mike, ATF does not consider black powder guns to be 'firearms" as they don't fire fixed ammunition and can be mailed through USPS as long as there are no state or local regulations against it.
