TC .50 Cal Renegade

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

TC .50 Cal Renegade

Post by tjtM38 »

I decided to take a break from the Mosin Nagant and other milsurps, so I went to the range and spent a relaxing morning shooting .490 patched round ball through this TC Renegade. I haven't shot the rifle in a couple of years and it did surprisingly well at 75 and 100 yards. This target was my last at 100 yards. Load was 70 grains FFG, .12 lubed round cotton patch and musket cap ignition.

If the rains hold off (they're not supposed to) we'll be shooting BP tomorrow, want to try loose powder and conicals in my inline .50 and see if I fixed the problem on the .44 revolver. So far the storms went north of us, I can only hope. The forecast is for thunderstorms through Wednesday, which sucks as we have a dog that's petrified of the thunder and runs around panting and climbing all over us. I may have to get some of them doggie ear muffs for her...

Let me take some during daylight tomorrow and I will post them. I have two really nice black powder rifles; this one and a Lyman .50 Cal Trade Rifle flintlock. I shoot the TC a bit more, because it is a caplock and just easier to deal with. However, today's session has me motivated to get the flintlock out and play with it.

Ponycarman asked for some additional photos, so I did the best I could with the clouds and unfavorable light.

This is a mid 80's Thompson Center built when the Hawken rifles were popular for hunting. This is essentially a slightly shorter version of the Hawken (26 inch barrel) without the brass decoration and patch box. It has a double set trigger which I like. I bought the rifle in Pennsylvania when I lived there. It was in a pawn shop with a broken ramrod, but it looked as if it had never been fired. Maybe someone tried to load it and didn't know what they were doing. I got it for 125 bucks at the time. I replaced the ramrod and put a musket nipple on it.

I really enjoy owning and shooting the TC's. I have the Renegade also but in 54 cal. I just got a TC Hawken 50 cal about a month ago. I shoot 90 grains in the 54. I have not shot the 50 yet, but with the longer barrel I think I will see how that 70 gr load will shoot with the. 490 round ball.

I had a Hawken years back, one of the CVA's, traded it to a hunter who wanted to bag a deer in the BP season. Nice rifles.

These double-set triggers are incredibly fine. You pull the rear till it clicks, then by-golly don't even twitch that front trigger until you are ready to destroy something.
