Question about slings, dogcollars, buckles, etc.

Hi folks. I recently acquired, over the course of the last couple of months, a Soviet M-44 carbine and a Finnish M-39, both shown in the photos posted below.

My questions are regarding the slings. Did the military organizations that had these weapons have express regulations for the mounting of slings? For example, on the dogcollars, were the buckles supposed to be on the right or the left side of the stock, and was the sewn loop at the front or the back? And on the Finish rifles, was the button loop at the front of the rifle or the rear? I'm sorry, I haven't been able to find any threads where this particular subject was discussed. Thanks.

There was a discussion on this believe it or not, but it was a while ago. I think that the finn sling the loop is on the bottom at least that is how I have mine. On the Russians I have the buckles on the right I think. :D

They did but I can never remember it all and slap the thinngs on anyway I feel like it, and they stay on only for pics and range trips before I take them off and store them away.

Generally speaking with all rifles the single layer part of the sling goes over your shoulder with the double part and the buckle away from the shoulder for comfort. The really early and well worn M39 slings I have seen in the first years they came over here were sometimes in rifle the opposite way because the wear on the single layer part had actually stretched the leather thinner to the point of coming close to breaking and indeed it did as I have several overlapped and sew early slings from the Finn's. The Finnish forces were sling poor and used what ever they could find for sling material even down to the tractor belt slings they made. I have always put all my screws and dog collers toward the right of the gun right or wrong it keeps buggered screw heads and buckles away from me and maybe getting hurt on them. Just a personal choice right or wrong! Bill :o

I just wish they would mount a US M1907 sling, but not a single Mosin of mine will. Someone just told me North Korea is walking out on the 1953 peace accord that halted the active part of the Korean War, well f***.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I know that there are certain things that are logical and make sense, but in my experience in the military (USMC 1969-1972) things were done a certain way not because they made sense or were logical but because that's the way someone with more brass on their collar ordered it be done and that was all there was to it. Having said that, I know that it is commonly believed that no military unit that is ready for combat can pass inspection, and vice-versa.

Don't worry Jim we'll just send Dennis Rodman back over to straighten it out. He's buddies with the little tyrant running things over there now. The fact that he can't string a coherent sentence together shouldn't be a problem though because it fits in perfectly with the MTV atmosphere we have at the white house currently.

I absolutely see you're point, Bill. The buckle on the rear dog collar could do some damage if a person isn't careful when shouldering the Russian rifles.
