Other Ammo???
Other Ammo???
This may be a dumb question, but i cant fund any 7.62/54r ammo local.. i know i can buy inline but shipping is killer, and i dont have the extra $110 to buy a surp box now..,Is there any other size ammo I can use, even f it means manually loading the chamber.. Such as 7.62/39 or 308 7.62/51??
Just wondering, I know it's probably a dumb question.. Thanks again though

Re: Other Ammo???
NO! Absolutely not, that could lead to major weapons damage and even your death. Pressures, bullet size, many variations between different rounds, even if it would chamber and fire you would be turning your rifle into a bomb. Most of us mail order in bulk, 440 round spam cans or 880 round cases, but if you shop around you can find places that will sell you a smaller amount for less shipping. Right now supply is tight, but more will show up.

+ 100 to what JYD said , Please ... If you are looking for ammo in smaller quantities check out Aimsurplus.com . They have some surplus 20 rnd boxes on closeout right now . Maybe you could get a few of those to hold you over until you can afford a crate. Here's a link http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx? ... groupid=40

Re: Other Ammo???
I saw that ffeng but with shipping for like 5 boxes its $50 for twice that I can get a spam can and 440 rnds, also I was hopping to run some shots this weekend..
Like I said I am new to all this, and I thought the 7.62 was the circumference of the round.. My thought was a shorter round would not auto load, but could be fed one by one..
Thanks for the no-go

Sometimes you can find open spam cans at the LGS where you can buy 20 packs of surplus. Our LGS has them for like $6.50. You probably already checked yours but I thought I would add my

Re: Other Ammo???
When buying ammo online, buying in volume saves money, shipping on a few boxes can and usually run almost as high as shipping a full case. It's not so much the weight that cost, it is being labeled by the D.O.T. as a hazardous material--labled ORM-D. If they were going to charge 50 bucks just to ship 100rds, a 59 pound 880rd case of Bulgarian x54r cost $32 to ship to my door from Aim. It cost almost the same when I was buying 7.5 French, the shipping cost difference between 500rds and 1000rds was negligible, only a few bucks difference. Buy small lots locally if you can find it, some on-line companies will charge to ship a 20rd single box for $14 or so bucks, and the caliber doesn't matter .17HMR or .45-70, shipping is still about $14 a box.Gsragtop wrote:I saw that ffeng but with shipping for like 5 boxes its $50 for twice that I can get a spam can and 440 rnds, also I was hopping to run some shots this weekend..

Dan's ammo has about the lowest cost I've seen-$185 shipped for a crate of ammo and you get the cool crate and a can opener with it

Re: Other Ammo???
It's not a dumb question if you think in terms of using .38 in a .357. However, that type of interchangability has generally come about due to newer weapons and calibers being based on something earlier. Since Mosins are the earlier weapon you could turn the question on its head and ask is there anything more modern that can use the 7.62x54R cartridge?Gsragtop wrote:This may be a dumb question, but i cant fund any 7.62/54r ammo local.. i know i can buy inline but shipping is killer, and i dont have the extra $110 to buy a surp box now..,Is there any other size ammo I can use, even f it means manually loading the chamber.. Re: Other Ammo???
Look through the list here http://gun-deals.com/list/ammo/7.62x54R There's lots of choices but as the guys have stated you'll do better to bite the bullet (ammo humor) and buy a crate. If that's not possible Graf and Son's has surplus by 20rd boxes and the shipping is free. There is a $6.95 handling fee but that's for the entire order. They're in the list also. http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/pro ... ctId/11216

Now that's funny. Everyone has their niche' mine happens to be knowing where stuff is. Ammo in particular. 7.62x54R specifically. I love ammo and spend a lot of time looking around for it. I really need to get out more, lol.

I definitely apprecitate the thought. I started out looking for ammo for myself and ended up turning it in to a hobby. Did I mention I love ammo?

Re: Other Ammo???
Ragtop, as you get more familiar with rifles and different calibers it will begin to make more sense. There are quite a few different cartridges that are similar in name, but different mechanically. That is why you never substutute ammo. There are a few exceptions, such as a adaptor that allows you to shoot a pistol round in the Mosin. If you find a source online that has the dimensions of different cartridges you will see the difference between them. Such as the fact that a 7.62x54r is a rimmed cartridge, while the 7.62x39 and 7.62x51(the Nato round) are rimless cartridges. There are similar but different rounds all through the world of firearms, such as the handgun rounds in 9mm. A 9x19mm is the common 9mm Luger that is so popular. Then the 9x18mm is a Russian round for the Tokarev pistols and such. Then again there is a 9x17mm which is the common 380. You don't have to fret though. Just always use the right ammo and you will be fine.
Re: Other Ammo???
Weldon, thanks for the heads up on Gaf, I just got 120 rounds, ear protection (which I hear is a good idea with these guns), and a ammo holder, shipped for $53.. That should hold me for a while, and allow me to save for a tin of surp. Thanks again, you dee man !
Re: Other Ammo???
I would think that ear protection is a good idea when shooting any gun!
