For lack of any better moniker, may I present:

The Remington Mosin Nagant, Model 1891 Cadet Rifle, No. 322

Research yields very little verifiable information on the production and purpose of this particular variant. And the "Cadet Rifle" name is possibly more of a common characteristic description than a proper title. These can also be known as Training or Drill rifles. *

Many can be observed with cut barrels and stocks, to similar length and weight of the M1903, and no front sight. Some have original Remington stock nosecaps, others with M1903 or M1917 bayonet lugs, and some without nosecaps. Some stocks have numbering on the left side of the receiver, others on the buttstock toe, and others not numbered at all. Some have rear sights, some don't. Some have arsenal logos, some don't. Most, if not all, don't have serial numbers. Some have smooth bores, some have rifling. Most have the magazine follower and extractor absent, and the firing pins cut. Many appear assembled with inferior, defective, or otherwise second quality parts.

Below are a few links that have both historical content, and conversational observations. While many have researched the Cadet Rifle, there seems to be no solid tie to any specific training facility or school. They are also commonly mentioned in the same category as the Bannerman sporting conversions of the 1920's, though again, no solid documentation can be referenced - but still worth mentioning.

My example below was purchased from another collector, and can be observed in one of the links above. But I've taken the opportunity to photograph it again. Please enjoy, and as always, thanks for looking.

Blank barrel markings, no sights.

M1917 bayonet lug

Magazine floorplate pinned shut, and no follower (receiver bolt channel in the white).

Clipped firing pin, extractor missing, cracked Remington bolt body with what appears to be a "D" (defective?) stamp. Poor fitting/tolerance, as evidenced of the bolt connector dragging noticeably on the sear (bolt works hard)

Knot flaw in the stock wrist, apparent rack or inventory number on the buttstock toe. Circle-R cartouch behind the trigger housing.

Just some more pics.
