I'm afraid you are right, JYD. I have the stripped lower, but was unwilling to pay my LGS the amount they wanted for the various parts kits to finish the gun - would have been more than a complete gun, but with slightly better spec - so they said. They are now out of uppers with no idea when or if more will come in. I'm like the guy who buys a new boat in the spring, and then there's six more weeks of rain. Hope the insanity dies down without the government adding more bs laws.

You didn't look into buying the kit online yourself? There is nothing in the kit requiring an FFL, you can order one direct from a supplier. I bought one from Bushmaster 20 years ago this week and built an M4 on a receiver I acquired earlier. It was cheaper and I ended up with the same rifle as if I bought it complete.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I looked online and was encouraged by the prices. But they'd been out of stock for weeks. When I contacted Del-ton, they said they had no idea when they would have kits in stock again and recommended a distributor who was out of stock. I'm not in a hurry, but it pisses me off that the government might ban these. Not really a fan of black plastic, but I'm less a fan of being told what I can and cannot have.
