Jolly Green Chopper wrote:That's a Louisiana Rice Field Goose gun. The old timers in La. paddle out into middle of the rice field, wait until dawn when the big ones fly over and try to reach up with those long 12 or 10 ga. cannons.I have seen some with 48"single muzzle loaders with fulll choke able to hit at well over a hundred yards. Nice Gun a real beauty to see all the hard work you must have put in on that one if it was in a flooded basement. Thanks JGC
Thanks I really love this gun. It was about the best of the bunch. They were stored at my uncles house in Maryland where I'm originally from. Now talk about a long barreled shotgun I do have an old Westernfield 100B 12ga that has a 36" barrel. It was another one that was in the bunch and is in a lot worse shape. I lost a spring for it so it was apart and really suffered. I'm not sure that one is worth fixing it's so bad. Here's a link to the thread about the 311, http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... f=12&t=885 I'm not finished with it but it's useable now. I still have some cosmetic work to do on it but it's fully functional and it's so nice seeing it on the rack again. Did I mention how much I love this shotgun? They were stored for about 17 or 18 years. My firearms will never be neglected like that ever again. It makes me sick thinking about them. I'm slowly going through them and fixing what can be.

Take Rons advice about keeping the buttplate firmly in the shoulder pocket and you will be fine, Mosins don't kick, a mule kicks :)
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

If you have a musket barrel m44 try shooting some custom loads. Smooth bore means you might be able to make a shot gun out of it .If it is smooth enough. What does everybody else think of the idea. I had an old J.C. Higgins 22LR. boys carbine that after I finally shot out the rifling I used rat shot for snakes, frogs, game birds, etc. Worked OK for up close in the swamp,Why not an old MN if it passes the Okie head gauge test.Is that not a safe idea for some reason? Thanks JGC
