I did actually look up how to field strip it quickly :)

I began to panic. I tried the cleaning rod trick with a brass .22 caliber brush. My first go was 15" :big shock: I tried it a few more times and got random results...12" to no twist at all. I thought all sorts of swear words about that point! I did notice I brought out a lot of crud, so I went ahead and did a thorough bore cleaning until I got a clean patch. Tried it again...nothing. I was using my new handy dandy brass rod for the first time and it felt free and loose, so I really started to panic. I finally drug out my old school kit and tried that. First try, 9". I tried it 3 more tries, all 9".

Well, I got to clean the bore...and am glad I did. She's nice and shiney :)

So, reading your posts...stay with the 55 gr? That may be a good thing if the military switched bullet weights. 55 gr ammo should be readily available.

Thanks again guys. I truly appreciate it!

Good to go with 55. You could shoot the 62s but you would have to re-zero. You won't need anything higher than that anyway if it's just for a casual shooter.

Its been an educational evening, thank you :)

In my quick search online, it looks like I need a couple of wrenches for this thing? I will want to take it apart to a point anyway and clean it up. Its a good way to get to know the rifle too.

I can tell I am going to really like this rifle once I get to know it!

For general cleaning you won't need a thing. Take out the rear pin. Pop it open. Take out the bolt, tear it down and clean all the carbon build up off. Make sure the rings are offset when you put it back. Chamber and bore cleaned. Pop it all back together.

One more thing. Set up 25 meter target for zero and you will be good to 300 meters.

Thank you. For the time being, I have access to a 25 yard indoor range. I'll zero there. Around mid-February, I'll have access to up to 600 yards. I hate to, but I'll have to scope it to be able to see anything beyond 25 yards  I actually like the open sights on it. Well, rear peep anyway.

I've been Googling and I can't find the specific model of what this rifle is. It appears to be a Plinker Plus, but this one has the removable handle. I'll continue to read up on it.

Man, I used to buy guns to shoot. Now I buy them and end up scouring obscure websites to maybe find a tiny piece of information that may give you a hint on where to search next! I love it :)

Thanks again!

Just call it an AR15, everybody knows what an AR is, say plinker plus and they gonna look at you funny. Surplus military cleaning kits are all over the place, or did one come in the butt trap?

It could just be built from parts. It is hard to pin down a specific model on a gun that has so many optional parts.

Nope, no cleaning kit or any other accessory came with it. I am OK with that especially since it had the extra mags, case and ammo. I'll get the wrenches and kit so its "complete". He is going to mail the manual to me tomorrow. He had it in his desk at work.

Man, what a day this turned out to be. When I woke up, I had no special plans for today and was simply thankful that I had coffee...and the fact that I woke up lol. Two hours later I am asking questions and now tonight I am researching a rifle I've never seen before.

I may have to study SA's skip work thread and see if I can come up with a legitimate reason to stay home tomorrow :)

(I have like 8 weeks of saved vacation and as of the 1st, got another 4. I may have to use one or two of them soon!)

You need a throw down gun. Something like a Lorcin .380 comes to mind.

Very nice and a great deal. So does this count as 11 or 12? Better get some reloading supplies to feed that piece of plastic. :vcool: :vcool:

As to the AR platform, keep it clean and keep it lubed and it will operate all day long.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

One of the really nice things about the AR is that by popping out two pins you can swap uppers and be good to go in no time flat. You will find that any semi-auto will go through ammunition so much faster and with less recoil than any bolt (except a .22lr) and you might think about reloading.

millman wrote:Yes Ron. The more the twist the better it will stabilize the heavier bullets. 1:7 is more twist than 1:9 or 1:12. The bullet will make one revolution per 7 inches of barrel VS. the 1 revolution in 9 or 12 inches of the others. My FN barrel is a 1:7 and it doesn't like the 55 gr bullets too well.
oops, that's right.
I had the ratio right, but the number of twist wrong

5.56mm is a favorite of the hoarders so the price is a bit high right now, reloading is the way to go if you plan to shoot it regular.
