It really depends on what you are fishing for - really it does... :) and making it as easy as possible for the kids. They need the visual feedback when a fish takes the bait. It takes time to feel a pick up on a straight line but there is no question when the bobber sinks and begins moving away. You can't go wrong with a medium action rod (your ugly stick sounds ok) and a real to match. Need a real that will throw 6-10 lb test line. I couldn't begin to start a discussion on lures. A worm on a bobber has caught just about everything that swims in fresh water so you can't go wrong with that. If you can get leaches get 'em. They attract everything too but the sun fish won't tear them up like they do with worms. If there are crappies get some 1/16th oz. jig heads and use minnows and use the 6 lb. test. Should get two take up reals - fill one with 8-10 for bobber fishing and the other with 6 to cast and real in small jigs or just hang those off a bobber too.

I got both the rods setup tonight. But unfortunately we probably won't get to try them out tomorrow. I've come down with something. Been coughing gook up and have a fever tonight. If by some miracle I wake up and feel fine then we will still go. Most likely we are going to have to go some other time. My head feels like it is going to blow lol. I think it is just a bad allergy attack. I cut the grass yesterday and some today. Sometimes whatever it kicks up gets to me. :vsad:

I'm doing a little better this morning. No fever I think. Just dopped myself up with advil cold and sinus abd mucinex. I may get to go if the fever doesn't come back. Otherwise it just feels like allergies.

Lots of hot tea, and stay home in front of the TV today, you don't want it to come back worse.

We are back! My wife is quite the good luck charm . We got there around 10:30-11. We weren't ther as long as I thought we would. We both got wore out haha. And we so successful I didn't want to be greedy :D. I'll have to do a final count but we caught 8-9 catfish. 3 were tossed back because they were to little. 5 or 6 came back with us. Yummmmm. This was my most successful fishing trip so far and I reeled in my biggest so far. I don't have a scale but the three biggest must be around 8-10lbs. Maybe 12. It doesn't sound like much but its a big accomplishment for me.

I am ashamed to say though my wife caught the biggest

The reel work wonderful. Smooth and easy :). The line worked just fine too. My knots held up great as well. I used to just do some conglomeration of overhand knots. But I learn a few the other night that were pretty simple. I used the palomar, and it held up just fine :D

It has been a good day :)

I was very surprised to see the size of the fish my wife pulled out. Expecially being that this was her first fishing trip since middle school haha. It was great seeing her get in there and net the fish I caught. She hates fish and wouldn't touch one or any bait. Every time a fish wiggled around she ran off. I was happy to see her net the fish I caught even if it ment her getting splashed :D.

I'm going to honest that before this trip I knew how to bait my hook and how to cast and reel. But I hadn't had any fish handling expirience. Everything I had caught {not much) had been unhooked and either released or put on the stringer by my father. Since he wasn't here for this trip I had to do it all myself :beek: . It was an interesting learning experience haha. I think after the second or third I started to get the hang of it sort of. I quickly learned where the spines on a catfish were and what their teeth were like haha. The bigger ones can bite  .

Great day all in all. My next skill to learn is cleaning up and preping the fish :? . That should be interesting
