Sweet rifle!!!

Re: Take a Knee, Fellas. Original Match 1898
Well after 2 seperate days and much pain from my bad knee for two hours today I drug the rifle I have like Matt's out of one of the smaller safes and reset the rifle slots got the one in question out and into the light of day. It is all matching too and a Tula 1900 in date with a 67139 serial number on it. The cocking piece is marked matching along with the back flat of the butt plate, the mag door, bolt, and there are of course no import marks anywhere. The stock is marked with an early Tula rondel with the 1900 date on the right side of the butt. Flipped the butt plate off and I think there is what I make out to be 96 or 98 with a 4 and another mark too small for my old eyes. My rifle had no hand guard with it and the front band had a sling swivel as part of it. That was hacksawed in two I would guess because they had no idea about the opposite thread in the bands. It has another swivel on the mag for the sling too. Of course no sling slots and no recoil lug either. The wood and finish is really nice and I was shocked it cleaned up so nice because it was loaded with mouse turds in the barrel channel and what I took to be chicken crap on the outside of the wood. They amazingly wiped right off with a Ballistol saturated rag and nothing else! Like I said I was shocked. From what I hear Racer Guy might be headed my way and maybe between the two of us we can take some pictures. I wish I had the computer and decent camera but I would have to retrain every day for a year to retain it. I just am not talented at stuff like that and never have been! I talked to Matt and passed the information from this rifle on to him and he was happy to get it. Oh and Matt I still have no idea where that sling section is and couldn't find it again today.
Hey I am an old Fart give me a break!
This is you guys computer age not mine? Bill

I'm planning on being at the show this weekend Bill, I'll know for sure which day when I get my schedule for the weekend on Wednesday. I'll be happy to take pictures of anything you want and can do it at the show or somewhere else.

OK Dave! I sent you a PM with more info for you. Sunday will obviously be less crowded but anything there will be gone unless priced out of this earth which is common these days. I will have ammo too by the way. Bill
Re: Take a Knee, Fellas. Original Match 1898
Thanks for the call, and many more thanks for the confirmation of the buttplate serial number placement, Bill. It is information that confirms at least a partial span of years for the practice of stamping numbers on the face of the rear buttplate, rather than on the top tang - at the Tula arsenal, at least from 1898r to 1900r.
Your effort of digging through to the back row of the safe is commendable. Much appreciated!
And here is the link that you wanted to Vic Thomas' Russian and Com-Bloc Sling ID. http://mosinnagant.net/USSR/RussianComblocslings.asp The sling with the front hook is the second style that is pictured.
Have a good time at the show, and I hope Racerguy takes a Zillion pics of Zeebill's gems!

Buttplate serial stamp, for reference.

Re: Take a Knee, Fellas. Original Match 1898
Thank You Martin! Believe it or not I can still not find that in there without your referance URL so I put it in my favorites. I think this computer is getting mighty close to the end as it is almost 10 years old now. I think I still have somewhere out in the shop the hacksawed front swivel but I doubt it would tell me anything like wear patterns to kind of get an idea what kind of sling this rifle had on it. It was quite rusty if I remember right. When I got this rifle I had to travel 300 miles one way to inspect it at an auction and drove home with it alone singing all the way home. I got a bayonet and scabbard with it too for $525 and I doubt at that time I really realized what I had completely. Mawkie had put a $500 absentee bid in on it and when it started at that I did not hear him say it was absentee and I thought oh crap what is this thing going to cost me? I went in with $525 and waited for the counter bid but nothing happend and it was mine that easy. Well worth the 600+ miles and utter exhaustion I fought all the way home. Wonder how I ever made it in one piece home but after buying the rifle for what I spent I figured I could not afford a motel stay. With my health today it would not even be a question I would be staying over some where. Ha ha! Old age strikes quick fella's! Bill

I would like to hear the story of how you acquired this one. Was is a local find, or a auction?
