Bummer...new SKY M39 damaged in shipping
Re: Bummer...new SKY M39 damaged in shipping
Yeah, that does suck when are expecting a new Prize. However , I have done business with Mrs. Burns on several occasions, and SHE has always done right with me on what issues that I had .
Hang in there

Re: Bummer...new SKY M39 damaged in shipping
BTW no offense to any delivery driver, but I have seen some tossed/ abused boxes on our receiving docks at this time of the year, MAYBE because of the volume, or frustration. Gunsnammo does not package them the best for the possible shipping abuse.

It's called the UPS stamp of approval, got that straight from a friend of mine who works for the company . If that was my M39 you would hear the sound of someone screaming MOTHER****** clear across the state. Pat is good about taking care of this sort of shit. Fix that stock, that's not close to the worst I have seen.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I don't think there is a worry with Pat Burns replacing the stock. She sells a LOT of these rifles and I don't think she would want negative comments if she doesn't replace it. And it also sounds like this type of thing isn't UNCOMMON with them. I've bought two other M39s from her and both were exactly as described and arrived in perfect condition. Poop happens. I don't think it's a "conditional" situation. We shall see.SA1911a1 wrote:It sounded to me like the OP says that Pat Burns replacement is conditional on UPS agreeing to pay. I don't think that would be ok with me. You bought a complete rifle, if that is not what is delivered, then the OP should get a replacement, refund, or what ever you think is right. The delivery was a contract between UPS and Pat Burns, the OP was not involved in that transaction. The OP paid Burns for the gun, Burns is responsible. The conditional thing would have gotten me on somebody's butt, like right now.

LOL...those were my EXACT words as it slid out of the box. Thank goodness I don't live close to anyone. No fixing though. It's what I said when I saw a 91/30 hanging out of a box as the UPS guy carried it inside back in '07. Classic, ****nuts incorporated, had shipped to rifles in a single wall box together with just a little bit of wadding paper stuck in with them. These were two "rifles of the day", extra nice condition hand selected refurbs that now had a few scratches on the stocks that took me weeks to repair with a q tip and vodka bottle. None of the accessories had fallen out the hole somehow, but when I saw that walking in a hollered Mother****** pretty damn loud, and made the driver stand there while I inspected the contents of the box. I burned up the phone line to Classic and they blamed it on some FNG in shipping, riiiiiiiiight.....I was offered a small discount on the next rifle I bought, it amounted to ten bucks i think, c*******er's started chroming milsurps around that time and we parted ways permanently so I never got shit.

I understand and agree with that. Some of my favorite mosins are Spanish imports. They are for the most part total mixmasters. Also they spent decades here allowing parts to be swapped etc. Its just that when I buy a specific rifle I bear that in mind. If I were to buy one that's got a good chance of being legit as in the condition it was exported here, I wouldn't want to have the stock replaced.Deputy wrote:Ahhh...but there is no proof that the stock that is broken is actually the original stock.racerguy00 wrote:Maybe its just me but I wouldn't be happy having the rifle restocked at all. Even if it were in the 'correct' stock, everytime I looked at it I would know it wasn't in 'as last issued' condition. I have bought rifles in the past to bring back from bubbas misdeeds etc. But with those I went into it knowing the rifle would never be 'right'. If such a thing were to happen to a rifle I had ordered I would ask for an equally uncommon example or a lesser one with the difference made up in refunded money. Just my![]()
I bet a lot of firearms people buy have parts on them that aren't "original as-issued" condition and they probably don't even realize it. The ONLY way you could know for certain is if you were right there at the production line and bought it as it rolled down the conveyor belt. This is especially true of Finnish rifles. Consider this...the receiver is a hex receiver taken off a WW1 Russian Nagant and Finland just rebuilt it. So it's not "original as-issued" from the getgo.

Re: Bummer...new SKY M39 damaged in shipping
I would land pretty close to Racer on most rifles. Maybe not exactly as original but original from import is sometimes recognizeable. On this one i don't know. If it happened on a older m91 or something i would be really mad. Is there an indentation of the tang date on the stock tang area? This is round fingers so...
I would not fix the current one unless it was a different situation. The stocks on rifles are a big part of the whole package, as in original finish and not sanded and so forth. These are original stocks i am sure (as in original finn stocks) (i think)

Deputy, whatever happens, I do have to say I hope I'm able to track down an m39 like that someday. Its pretty darn sweet. I got my 41 Sako from Pat Burns and would do business there again.

Stock replaced due to battle damage in the christmas 2012 campaign.Deputy wrote:Mosins have probably had things replaced on them at one time or another so it doesn't bother me. But this one HAS to have the SKY cartouche and the year date to make it "correct". Without that, it goes back for a refund. That's the way I bought it and that's the way it should be.

Thanks Racer. It is a beauty. So disappointing to have this damage.racerguy00 wrote:Deputy, whatever happens, I do have to say I hope I'm able to track down an m39 like that someday. Its pretty darn sweet. I got my 41 Sako from Pat Burns and would do business there again.

I haven't been exactly pleased with any of the "packing" of long guns that I've purchased. Bubble wrap is cheap enough...I've been lucky so far and the worst I've had has been the muzzle poking out of the end of the box.

And don't forget we're talking about a Finn here, not a Russian. The stock is probably the one the Finns put on it and not something that was swapped out by someone. Chances are that stock was tuned to that action and replacing it throws that out the window. I'd want the rifle replaced.

Re: Bummer...new SKY M39 damaged in shipping
Working in the shipping/trucking industry, I learned something if you order something over the Christmas holidays, do it before or after the shipping rush. Alot of companies will use temp workers on the docks during the peak holiday season, and believe me, they don't give a damn. They will stack items anyway possible and get every available space full, because the Christmas time of year empty air space in trailers and box trucks is a massive money loss for carriers and bulk carriers. The temp workers just do what they are told, cause they are just temps and the following week, they may be scrubbing toilets in some office. I've seen some go as far as using the back of a forklift to compress the load enough to get the door down and latched.
I have ordered stuff over the holidays, but have asked the seller if they will hold and ship after the first of the year. It takes patience, but it can save valuable items and headaches later dealing with shippers and carriers.
Hope everything works out with the busted rifle, man, that really does suck.

Sure with all the parts they have I am sure they can build you another one! More proof of what could goes on there regularly! To ship a rifle without bubble wrap and news paper is asking for trouble, especially around Christmas when there is such a glut of packages in the loop. I would not except a replacement stock as that takes away from any historic value or orginality of the rifle but I doubt they care about that as their actions prove. Another rifle would have me doubting about it too, but then I doubt everything they say and do to begin with. You people can go on touting them because they have the major supply of M39's and you want one but I for one will buy nothing if I casn tell it originated there. To each his own but this just proves what they think about what they are selling. BillDeputy wrote:Update
Just got this from Pat Burns:
I have seen the same type of damage before. It happens
when they put the box in the trailer and it is laying flat over a few boxes with a gap and
then they throw a heavy package on top of it ot they walk on it. I will file a claim with ups
and they might want to see the damage. I will replace the stock after ups confirms they will paying.

That works for me. I asked if it would have the SKY cartouche and date (43) underneath it. At the very least, I would want the SKY cartouche.

Pat always packed the rifles she sent me very well, I still have some of the boxes packed with newspapers.

The actions of Burns in company just prove how they feel toward what they are selling! If they don't have it they will "find it" for you. I don't care how they pack things, be it as poor as they apparently do, what are you getting and how close will it be to the way it was shipped into this country and the way the Finn's built it? Many tout how the shims were still in place when I got my rifles from them, who put them there a temp paid by Burns or the Finns? Just too many things in their past crop up and I will never trust them enough to buy from them ever!
Bill
